Right now our injury level is set to Normal. In prior years this has usually meant a handful of injuries per team, but not an epidemic, though the injuries have often been ones that would keep players out weeks and months.
OOTP tweaked its injury settings either with this version or OOTP 19. Right now, the quantity of injuries is still a handful, but most of them are small ones that don't last a significant length of time. Some pitchers will still go down with serious injuries, but very few position players do.
Increasing the amount of injuries would still have been an issue in the past for a few reasons.
A) Even minor injuries to starting pitchers could throw a team's rotation and bullpen out of whack.
B) Thanks to smaller rosters, the AI couldn't be trusted to fill an injured player's spot competently.
C) If a GM needed to put a player on the IL for a significant amount of time, they'd often need to miss at least two sims.
Three things have changed in the PBA to help mitigate these concerns.
1) An extra roster spot allows teams to play with extra arms that could start games. This could help protect against pitching disasters. Said extra roster spot allows teams to also have more bench spots, so the AI doesn't have your backup catcher turn into your starting center fielder.
2) If a player has a minor injury and you just want to IL him for a week to stabilize your roster, the IL time dropping from 14 days to 10 increases the likelihood of IL stints only missing one week.
3) Beginning next year, we're moving into present-day MLB schedules, which afford extra off days. There'll be more days to rest, which will help with taxed bullpens and rotation injuries.
I believe an increase in injuries would make for a richer PBA experience. Building up depth in the upper-minors would be more important, it would increase roster churn, and it would increase the amount of decisions GMs would need to make, allowing for a more rewarding experience. If enacted, I'd also be open to pushing back the implementation by a season to allow teams to have time to prepare.
