Right now there's language in the constitution about specific steps to take with players who have been DFAd and require the commissioner's decision making on what to do when their time expires. I'm eliminating the codifying of specific instructions as I make decisions on a case by case basis. Usually I try to make sure no long-term money will be lost and use context and circumstance from there.

I'd leave language in that just says "The commissioner is empowered to make decisions regarding DFAd players whose time has expired that are in the best interests of the unowned/unattended team." So its not just arbitrary.

I face this all the time with my small 12 team league. It's simple, if DFA time runs out and the sim is stopped I try and demote the player to AAA. If he refuses he is released. Now, sometimes I'll give a manager 2 minutes in SLACK if the player looks like a huge hit...and if they respond right then and give me instructions I'll act on it..but that's it. As GM's we have to pay attention. The Commmish has too many things to do to have to worry about any extra steps.

I agree with Detroit we should tell you what we want done if a player refuses to be demoted otherwise they should be released.

I think I'm going to use the language of Oakland's suggestion and act according to what Detroit wants. DFA's happen frequently enough where I don't want them to be auto-released, but if there isn't a significant long term hit, a franchise-crippling mistake (say trading for Mike Trout and not taking him off the DFA list) and an easy roster move to make, I'm just cutting the guy.
