Milwaukee Brewers (13-2) @ San Diego Padres (10-7)
MIL: Mitch Cavanagh (1-0, 7.88) SD: Jeff Henry (0-2, 4.24)
Brewers 5 Key Stats
5.4: Mike Perches' WAR last season as a rookie. He fractured his knee on April 16 and the Brewers will need to replace his performance going forward.
2.70: The highest ERA of any Brewer reliever who has worked an inning or more. Despite losing Sean Newcomb, The Brewers' relief core of Edwin Diaz, Mark Warf, Blayne Enlow, Josh Blystone, Michell Milano, and Toby Dunlap has been tremendous at locking down Milwaukee victories.
1.017 OPS: Rodolfo Rivera's career Pacific Coast League OPS in 215 games. Rivera has been a developing prospect kept in a lesser role as a result of Milwaukee's depth. Now 24, as a result of Mike Perches' injury, Rivera will need to play a bigger role for the Brewers, and based on his success in the PCL, he should be up to it.
5.29: Milwaukee's Zone Rating, best in the National League
13-2: Milwaukee's record, best in baseball.
Padres 5 Key Stats
3-7: San Diego's record in their last 10 games. The Padres have struggled in three losing series against the Rangers, Pirates, and Dodgers.
.288: Tyler O'Neill's on-base percentage last year after having experimental eye surgery. O'Neill only has a .250 on-base mark this year.
.958: Alejandro Toral's OPS. After a strong 2024, Toral struggled last year with a .233 Batting Average. This year his average is back over .300 and he has 19 RBIs.
6: The number of saves Jake Reed has, which leads the NL. Reed has been terrific since the Padres signed prior to 2025.
4+: Seasons Fernando Tatis Jr. has had with a sub-.300 on-base percentage. Tatis has 1 walk and 17 strikeouts this season.
Questions for the GMs:
For Luke Grimmelbein, how will you adjust your roster with Mike Perches out for the year?
Hawkeye worked 6.1 shutout innings in his first rehab start after a sprained elbow. When will he slot back into the rotation?
Have you been happy with your manager bot's substitutions this year?
For Creig McBride, your bullpen has been outstanding to begin the year. Is that what you envisioned when signing Jake Reed and Alex Colome last year?
Peter Lambert and John Thacker are both banged up. Will you change your rotation with them injured?
Fernando Tatis Jr. has had an on-base percentage under .300 each year of his career, but won a Gold Glove in 2024. Does his defense outweigh the lack of offense he provides?
TRIVIA: Who has the most career RBIs in Padres history?

Questions for the GMs:For Luke Grimmelbein, how will you adjust your roster with Mike Perches out for the year? Hawkeye worked 6.1 shutout innings in his first rehab start after a sprained elbow. When will he slot back into the rotation? Have you been happy with your manager bot's substitutions this year? 1. You can't truly replace one of the best bats in the league but we'll do our best. The only way we'll see Mike again this year is if we make it to the World Series. As you note Mike's injury will give Rodolfo Rivera a lot more playing time. Rodolfo's power has finally developed and he has been fantastic in a small role to start the year. He hasn't struck out in 27 PAs. He'll slot into the 2 hole that Mike was hitting in and his speed and plate discipline should be great at the top of the lineup. Another player who will have to step up is Will Dulihanty. He'll be our everyday LFer going forward. In 60 games last year he had a 393 OBP. If he and Rodolfo can be OBP dynamos at the top of our lineup I think we should be able to keep our lineup strong.
2. He'll slot back in today with Carlos Soto catching him. Carlos caught his rehab start and will be up to help ease Hawkeye in. Our pitching has been pretty good without Hawkeye so hopefully adding him back into the rotation can make us even better.
3. Actually...yes. I've been pleasantly surprised by my manager bot's moves. It seems like in OOTP 22 I can finally get the manager bot to correctly use my platoons which is awesome because I love platooning. If only I had had this manager bot last October...

1) This is exactly what the Padres Front Office was hoping for when we got Jake Reed & Alex Colome two seasons ago. However, like many times in OOTP, injuries are not always in our favor. They derailed our vision of a stellar back-end of a bullpen for another year. We are seeing what we wanted to this season! If I'm being honest, with Colome being a year older - I was not sure we would see it!
2) With our record not being what we have wanted the last 10, or so, games; we are NOT going to put Thacker or Lambert on the DL. Thacker with his 1.26 ERA will be in play in this series against the Brewers. We are hoping that his back stiffness doesn't take a turn for the worse. You will see Lambert in the last game of the series, as well. He has a finger blister, and we are hoping our medical staff can put enough "second skin" on the blister that he can get through 5 innings and move it to the bullpen after that. It just sucks that things like the Padres two best starters are both injured.
3) As it pertains to the Tatis situation - the Padres front office took a long hard look at this exact situation this past holiday weekend. We have come to the conclusion to move Tatis to a "bench" role going foward. We have promoted our 3B #19 prospect - Edinson Renteria (who we picked off from Colorado on the waiver wire). We have to make solid acquisitions since we are one of the "low-budget" teams. We made this pick-up with the sole purpose of hopefully keeping solid D @ the 3B position, while adding a little more traffic on the base paths. We shall see...

Padres 9 - Brewers 4
WP: J. Henry (1-2) LP: M. Arnold (0-1)
The San Diego Padres bested the Milwaukee Brewers, 9-4, at Petco Park. Tyler O'Neill was one of the standouts. He went 2 for 5 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Jeff Henry got the win, improving to 1-2. He worked 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 2. Milwaukee drops to 13-3.
O'Neill had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the sixth. On a 2-1 sinker from Toby Dunlap, he banged a grand slam home run to right-center, giving the Padres a 7-3 lead. It was the 4th home run of the year for O'Neill.
"It was a solid team effort," said O'Neill after the game.
Questions for the GMs:
For Luke Grimmelbein, with one out in the third Danny Tammaro drop down a bunt with a man on second, no outs, and the bottom of the order upcoming. Did you agree with the decision?
Carlos Soto made his first start of the year and went 0-4 with four strikeouts. Will he be on the roster much longer?
Tyler O'Neill has had vision issues his entire career, ones that experimental eye surgery doesn't seem to have corrected. How disappointed are you that Toby Dunlap gave him a pitch he knew was a meatball when O'Neill hit his home run in the sixth?
For Creig McBride, you mentioned that you may have to move Tatis into a lesser role as a result of his lack of offense. He did make all three of his defensive plays, including a nice snag on a Zack Prajzner grounder, and he went 2-4 at the plate. Does that change your strategy at all?
Yeison Corredera went 0-3 with two strikeouts, but he also walked, stole a base, and scored a run. How has he looked to you in a Padres uniform?
Royce Lewis went 2-4 with a walk. Do you see him turning into the star that was predicted for him when he was drafted sixth overall back in 2018?

Questions for the GMs:For Luke Grimmelbein, with one out in the third Danny Tammaro drop down a bunt with a man on second, no outs, and the bottom of the order upcoming. 1. Absolutely not. Danny has struggled to start the year and dumb decisions like that are not helping. I have the settings for sacrifice bunting on the lowest possible slider so I'm pretty sure that Danny called an audible there and didn't listen to the coaching staff. Hopefully it won't happen again and Danny can get back to what he does best, crushing the ball instead of bunting it. Our team philosophy is no bunts and we are going to emphasize that this week again to the guys on the team. I've called a 3 hour meeting where we will discuss why bunting is almost always a poor decision.
2. Soto is a captain in the clubhouse and is up to unite the clubhouse with the coaching staff all at each other's throats and feuding. Any production he gives us is a bonus, and with Elih Marrero raking we still feel good about our catcher spot. In Soto's next start after this one he caught a CGSO from Hawkeye so that will also buy him some more time on the roster. For now we'll give Elih more starts and use Soto mostly as Hawkeye's personal catcher.
3. Toby knows that he didn't throw his best pitch there, but our defense didn't help him out. Matt Aceto had a rough inning at 3rd base leading to those 3 unearned runs. Matt has been fantastic with the bat to start the year and his glovework is usually better. O'Neill has huge power and if he connects it goes a long way so our guys know they have to be better than that.
