Chicago Cubs (30-29) @ San Diego Padres (34-27)
CHC: Etienne Toet (6-3, 4.45)
SD: Jeff Henry (3-3, 3.15)
Cubs 5 Key Stats
269: Chicago's runs scored this season, 10th in the NL. In the past, Chicago has overcome pitching injuries by creating a ferocious offense. Injuries, defections, and triple-A talent has taken a bite out of Chicago's potency this year.
.262: Omari McCoo's Slugging percentage. McCoo has started 12 games at Third Base with Manny Machado on the IL, has a .167 average, and no home runs. The 2021 10th round pick is another example of Chicago lacking depth as the result of trading so many draft picks for high-end talent.
8: The number of A.J. Toet's starts that have gone between 5 and 5.2 innings. Toet once failed to go 5 frames, and twice has gone 6.1. In his eight other starts he's gone between 5 and 5.2. Toet was hit hard by the Padres in his last start, issuing five runs in 5.2 innings on June 3.
2.77: Chicago's bullpen ERA against San Diego this year. The Cubs starters may not have been great, but Chicago once again has a strong bullpen. The pen is fourth overall in bullpen ERA and Joe Caulder is the only healthy option with an ERA above 3.46.
.326: Wilson Contreras' batting average this year. After several down years, Contreras has looked like one of the best Catchers in the league again. he has eight homers and 32 RBIs to boot. Contreras leads NL Catchers in average and runs and is second to Daniel Flores in home runs, RBIs, and WAR.
Padres 5 Key Stats
3.15: Jeff Henry's ERA, 7th in the NL. Henry has gotten better and better every year and is emerging as a true front line pitcher to lead the Padres.
9: The number of positions where Padres hitters in 2026 have better averages than they had in 2025. Some of this is the result of internal improvement, such as Mike Fitzgerald jumping from a .230 average to .320. Some are the result of health where Royce Lewis has played in 60 of 61 games and has a strong .277 average after only playing in 99 games last year. Some is the result of smart transactions like demoting Ryan Vilade for waiver pick up Edison Renteria and his solid .288 average.
10: Alejandro Toral's home run total this year. He's on pace for a 27-homer season, same as last year. However, his .278 average is nearly 50 points higher than last year, and Toral is on pace for 45 doubles, an increase over his 32 doubles he hit last year. Toral hasn't been quite as good offensively as his phenomenal 2024 year, but he's had a strong year and that's been a huge boost to the Padres.
29: Clint Frazier's RBI total this year. The Padres have never had a starting Center Fielder produce more than 63 RBIs in a season. Frazier has given the Padres an offensive run producer in Center for the first time in their history.
.500: Yeison Corredera's average against the Cubs this year. He went 3-6 with two walks, three runs, two doubles, a home run, three RBIs, and two walks in their season last week. Corrdera may get the start bases on his success last week.
Questions for the GMs:
For Brandon Hillebrand, Manny Machado just recovered from his high ankle sprain. Will you bring him back or give him a rehab assignment first?
Chad Kersey has a .224 Slugging Percentage in 161 Plate Appearances. How long can you go with such inept production from one of your lineup spots?
You drafted Booker Goldman and Vincente Corado in the First Round and Supplemental Round of your draft. How do you think you did?
For Creig McBride, you're going to bump up Jeff Henry to start today, but who will take Adrian Morejon's spot in the rotation as he recovers from his hamstring injury?
The Cubs have some elite talent the top of the order and some automatic outs at the bottom. Do you want your club to pitch conservatively to the top of the Cubs order?
You selected Lumberjack Contreras in the first round in the draft. What did you think of your draft overall?
TRIVIA: Which Venezuelan hitter has the most walks for the Venezuelan National Team in the WBC?
