Boston Red Sox (78-67) @ Seattle Mariners (84-59)
BOS: Holden Christian (12-7, 4.14)
SEA: Damian Mendoza (11-5, 3.78)
Red Sox 5 Key Stats:
78: Boston’s win total, their second most in the PBA era. Boston is three away from a .500 season, and two away from tying their most PBA wins, set in 2017 when they had 80.
.331: Luis Villareal’s Batting Average against righties. Villareal was hurt early in the year and missed a lot of time. He only has 123 Plate Appearances this year. However, he’s crushed righties for a .380 average and six home runs. This is coming off a season where he hit .300 with 28 bombs against righties.
.237: Bryan Martelo’s Average in September after hitting .247 in August. He’s fallen back to earth after an All-Star first half.
40: Saves for Steve Hartman, most in Boston history. The 26-year-old closer has pitched in a ton of close games this year, going 40-48 in Saves. In fact, Hartman has the highest leverage rating in the American League.
8: Home Runs for Ulysses Cantu. Cantu has an interesting profile where he has a .302 average and 31 doubles, but only eight home runs. Cantu is fourth in average and doubles, and seventh in WAR among qualified First Basemen despite a low-power profile.
Mariners 5 Key Stats
10: Franklin Barreto’s Doubles. Barreto has 10 two-baggers in just 35 starts since joining Seattle. If he had played the hole season for Seattle at that pace, he’d be among the AL leaders in doubles.
23: Home Runs for Ivan Johnson. Johnson was a light-hitting middle infielder, who hit just three homers last year. This year, he’s morphed into a star with 23 long balls. Johnson went from being an eight-hitter or nine-hitter and now looks like a star.
.320: Wilmer Flores’ Batting Average. Flores has been one of the top hitters in the AL and may finish in the top five of a league in average for the first time in his career.
.594: Kevin Dowdell’s OPS against lefties. Seattle doesn’t have many options in the outfield, but Dowdell has struggled against left-handed pitching. He has just two homers and three doubles with a .230 average.
3.01: Seattle’s bullpen ERA. Seattle has the best bullpen ERA in the AL, behind a two-headed monster of Cowboy Lorenzen and Curt Gemma. Cowboy has 22 Saves and a 1.61 ERA, while Gemma has a 2.00 ERA and 12 Saves. A deep supporting cast hasn’t been as dominant, but has been reliable to round out the pen.
Questions for the GMs:
For Mike Ball, Bryan Martelo has fallen off of late. What will be your outfield and DH alignment for today?
Evan Skoug has been the better bat, but Logan Ice is the better defender. Who will start today?
How has Trent Clark looked to you since coming on board?
For David Boyer, how has the four-man staff worked for you with Ko injury?
How has Ivan Johnson been able to grow into such a slugger?
How has the Barreto trade worked for you?
