In a surprising move, the new Brewers GM wasted no time putting his stamp on this team:
Cleveland, Milwaukee Agree to Deal:
27-year-old RHP Danny Salazar and 19-year-old minor league SS Gabe Holt will now be playing for the Milwaukee Brewers and 23-year-old minor league RHP Conor Harber, 23-year-old CF Lewis Brinson and 24-year-old RHP Luke Weaver will be suiting up for the Cleveland Indians. The trade was announced today at a press conference by club officials.
Salazar has a lifetime record of 14 wins and 12 losses and a 3.31 ERA.
In his career Weaver has posted a record of 9-9 and compiled a 4.31 ERA.
Since this deal, Brinson was named the NL Rookie of the Year award winner. Why did the new GM trade away it's most promising young player, who at 23 could eventually be a perennial 30/30 guy? MBJ correspondent Matthew Wilder caught up with the Brewers GM and asked just that.
MBJ: Why was such a promising rookie, with all those years of control dealt for pitching in a ballpark that quite frankly is set up for hitting success?
Brewers GM: I can certainly see why people would wonder about that. It really comes down to a core philosophy. Good pitching trumps good hitting. Salazar has another 3 years of control and now sits atop of our rotation. We didn't have an ace. And if we want to compete for division titles and go deep in the playoffs, we needed to start by getting an ace.
MBJ: What moves are next for this team?
BGM: Not a chance i answer that question for you. We are still assessing this team and the direction we take will be known in good time. That's all i have time for, today.

(MBJ) The Brewers made a successful claim on 32 year old left-handed reliever Marc 'Scrabble' Rzepczynski to add a left-handed presence in the bullpen.
Rzepczynski held left-handed batters to a .319 slugging percentage, .605 OPS in 2017. Rzepczynski is a free agent after the 2018 season, set to earn $5.5M. The team released a statement after the claim was successful.
"We added a veteran presence in the bullpen, and our first left-handed option now. Clearly we had a need there, and with room to add payroll, it made sense to us under a one season scenario to add him. Another attractive component was the way he dialed it up in August/September to end the season."

Brewers Ryu Injured:
When Hyun-jin Ryu was hurt against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers were hopeful that the injury was not serious. However, it proved to be more severe than first thought. The 31-year-old starting pitcher suffered a torn labrum throwing a pitch in yesterday's game. Team doctors told BNN today that Ryu would miss 6 months of the season.

Thames Rips 3 Homers Against Pirates:
Fans are still buzzing after Milwaukee whipped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 7-2 today at Miller Park.
Eric Thames smashed three home runs in the contest, a feat that would be a career highlight for most players and few fans ever see. In a tremendous performance, the first baseman bashed out 3 hits in 4 at-bats, had 3 RBIs and scored 3 times.
At the postgame press conference, Thames said it was an "unbelievable" feeling to hit three home runs in a game.
"Getting one homer is special, and two is great," Thames said. "Three is just... wow."
Eric Thames hit a solo-shot off Chad Kuhl in the 1st, struck out in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Chad Kuhl in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off Edgar Santana in the 8th.
In his 2018 season totals, Thames has 6 home runs, .288 BA, .382 OBP, 11 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

You guys really needed that game from Thames. It's looked like you guys were scuffling to start the year. Thankfully for your your case, nobody has gained serious traction in the division yet.

You guys really needed that game from Thames. It's looked like you guys were scuffling to start the year. Thankfully for your your case, nobody has gained serious traction in the division yet. We have struggled out of the gate, to be fair. And we expected the pitching to not be quite where it needs to be, but to be 13th in the NL in average/on-base is puzzling! We are 4th in home runs, so if we can just get on-base we can turn those close losses into wins!

SP Zach Davies [Milwaukee, Wisconsin] " It's only 18 games into the new season, Milwaukee Brewer fans. There is plenty of time for the team to pick it up, so don't be so discouraged for the time being. Now on to our next caller..." The radio host delicately placed his full cup of coffee on the table and leaned back into his new-looking leather chair. He listened with an exaggerated eye-roll as the next caller simply ignored his previous advice, and railed on how badly run the current edition of the Brewers really are. " ...and what were they thinking when they traded for [Danny] Salazar??", the caller incredulously screamed into the night, probably expecting the host to agree. " Salazar is a bum and we lose out on one of the top young outfielders in the game. This team needs to clean house and bring in some REAL front-office talent." CLICK And with that, the call was over, leaving the host to once again come up with some semblance of sanity for a team that has played 18 games of a 162 game season. It goes without saying, fans of this team are starving for a winner. Since making the 1982 World Series, the Brewers have made the playoffs twice (2008; 2011). They have 10 winning seasons in 35 seasons. They have 3 seasons of 3+ million fans attending their games. This franchise is sorely in need of a reboot and a return to winning baseball. Enter the current front office regime. They have told everyone that will listen they intend on consistently competing in 3-4 seasons. For now, their intent is simply work with what they have. We recently caught up with the assistant GM, Tyrese Toodle, to discuss the team and it's start to the 2018 season. Milwaukee Baseball Journal: Thanks for taking the time to sit with us, Tyrese. How would you rate your start to the season?Tyrese Toodle: Thanks for having me. I would rate our start as a 'C' to be honest. I know we are trying and our players and coaching staff are doing everything they can when they step on the field. We are 4th in the NL in home runs, we are 3rd in stolen bases, two areas we expected to be strong in. We play in a home run friendly ball park and so for that reason, we put alot of effort into limiting our home runs against. We sit 3rd in home runs allowed currently! That said, we are 13th in both batting average and on-base %. We are 14th in runs scored, which we expected to be better at and of course our pitching just hasn't kept us in games early on. It's a long season and we expect some of those to turn around for us. MBJ: What is your response to some early season criticism regarding the Salazar/Brinson trade?TT: I would day it's way too early to be making judgements. Don't forget, Salazar didn't have a normal Spring Training with us, because he pitched in the World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic. We platoon our catchers to get the best from them, so valuable time was lost in working with them, getting a feel for the type of game they call etc. Not to mention how his defense plays behind him. Note to mention the proper time for him to develop his season routine. Salazar is going to be fine for us and we are thrilled we were able to trade for him. MBJ: The Brewers have the 5th ranked prospect system in the PBA. When can the fans expect a winner in Milwaukee?TT: We are thrilled with the talent in our system. The top tier of our system is 21 and 22 so we expect them to begin to make an impact in 3-4 seasons. Until then, we will use our depth to our advantage and supply the major league club with youth. 3B Jake Burger, CF Corey Ray, 2B Isan Diaz and SP Luis Ortiz will provide Brewer fans with plenty to cheer about when they come to the big leagues. By 2021 fans will be hard-pressed to find a ticket in this town to watch their team play. Mark my words. MBJ: Thanks for your time and we look forward to catching up with you down the road. TT: Thanks for having me.
