San Francisco Giants (8-7) @ Philadelphia Phillies (9-7)
SF: Alfredo Estevez (1-1, 4.00)
PHI: Doug Dombrowski (0-1, 4.76)
Giants 3 Key Stats
3: RBI’s for Jadon Ancrum: Ancrum has struggled leaving the cozy confines of Camden Yards. He has four doubles, but he’s batting just .214 without a homer. It’s still very early; the Giants have played in brutal offensive parks to start the year; and Salesman has a track record of great success—but it’s possible the Giants were sold a lemon?
6: one-run losses for San Francisco: The Giants are a solid 8-7, but with some better luck could be much better. They’ve played a ton of close games, going 3-6 in one-run affairs. The bullpen has been strong—the offense, however, has a .599 OPS in innings 7-9, third worst in the league, and their overall offense is 14th overall. That should improve, and San Francisco’s record may improve with it.
14: RBI’s for Juan Castereno: Castereno may be a jackass, but he’s a jackass who drives in runs. He’s off to a great start by the bay with a .306 average, four doubles, four homers, and 14 RBI’s. He’s played a good Left Field to boot. Even in brutal hitting parks, Castereno is hitting—as he’s done his entire career. His acquisition may ultimately tip the NL West to San Francisco.
Phillies 3 Key Stats:
4: Runs allowed by Juan Carrizales over the weekend: Bonkers did not have a strong weekend, blowing a save and taking a loss in two extra inning losses to the Cardinals in a three-game sweep. Philadelphia’s pen was a big part of their success last year, but the unit has taken it’s lumps in the early going, ranking seventh in ERA despite A.J. Masucci pitching well. Philadelphia doesn’t have the best starting rotation, so it will need it’s key bullpen arms like Bonkers to pick up the slack.
21: RBIs that will go on the IL this week: Mickey Moniak strained his ACL and will miss two months, and Isaiah High tore an abdominal muscle and will be out more than a month. Moniak is hitting .350 and High has a .370 on-base percentage. Both have driven in runs and are excellent offensive players. Philadelphia will have to get creative to replace their offense.
15: Luis Morales’ RBIs: After breaking out his rookie year, Luis Morales had a couple of more pedestrian seasons that had some worrying his rookie year was a fluke. He erupted last year though, and is off to a great start this year, reminding the PBA why they call him Stud. His 15 RBIs are in the Top 10, and his six Home Runs are tied for the NL lead. He’s a force to be reckoned with and San Francisco will need to account for him if they want to win the game.
Questions for the GMs:
For Vic Black, your offense is 14th in runs to start the year. Are you concerned at all?
How do you like how your offensive additions from the offseason are playing?
What’s been the deal with all the one-run losses to start the year?
For Matt Grubs, Bobby Witt Jr. is dealing with a muscle strain in his leg. Will he take time off to heal or play through it?
How will you change your lineup with Moniak and High out for at least a month?
Jonathan Guzman has a .486 OPS. How many at bats can you give El Aspirador before it tanks your offense?
TRIVIA: Juan Castereno has the most position player WAR all-time for Oakland. Who is second?
