Colorado Rockies (25-22) @ New York Mets (19-26)
COL: Roger Macari (1-1, 6.18)
NYM: Tony Gonzalez (2-7, 5.29)
Rockies 3 Key Stats
6: Losses in Colorado’s last seven games: The Rockies have really struggled recently, with their offense falling apart late last Sunday at home against the Reds, and continuing to struggle in San Diego and at home against the Diamondbacks. Colorado’s averaged fewer than three runs per game during the stretch, and with an underwhelming starting staff, can’t afford those offensive struggles.
38: RBI’s for Danny Davis: Colorado’s prized rookie already looks like a star. He’s hitting .284 with 11 homers in the early going. Add in 10 Doubles and a pair of triples, and he’s slugging .562. He hasn’t walked that often yet, but they might come now that he’s earned pitchers respect. Importantly, while he doesn’t have much power, he’s hitting .286 against lefties, meaning he can be a full time player. Davis hasn’t had a multi-hit game since May 17 though, and Colorado could really use him breaking out.
.218: Tom Gunning’s Batting Average: Gunning has supplied Colorado with Doubles, but the Batting Average has resulted in Gunning being a negative player. He doesn’t have much patience, so his OBP is .286 despite playing at Coors Field. His .740 OPS isn’t bad, but Gunning has primarily played DH and First Base. He needs to pick up his average or he may find himself out of Colorado’s plans with Nolan Arenado continuing to produce.
Mets 3 Key Stats
6: Mets home wins: The Mets have not been good at home, going 6-11 at Citi Field in the early going. The Mets have only played five home games after May 4, splitting with Baltimore in two games, and getting swept by Arizona the other three. New York simply hasn’t hit at home, with a .610 home OPS. That mark is second to last in the NL to Miami, but more than .100 points fewer than 13th place Chicago’s .717 mark.
.485: Bill Pollard’s OPS: Pollard was a nice-looking rookie in Chicago last year, hitting 20 homers and 29 doubles for the Cubs. Acquired in the Liam Thomas trade, Pollard has been terrible in New York. He has just two homers and six RBIs, with 40 strikeouts to eight walks. He has only three multi-hit games this year, and two were against Colorado. Granted they were in Coors Field, but the Rockies may be just the team Pollard needs to see to get out of his slump.
1: Home Runs for Joe Rizzo: Rizzo is New York’s First Baseman, but he hasn’t slugged like a First Baseman. Rizzo has just seven doubles a single homer in 37 Games so far. He’s slugging .379, not giving power to a team that needs it desperately. This season is very similar to Rizzo’s 2027 with Kansas City where he had only five long balls. The Mets are disappointed they haven’t had a power hitting First Baseman this year.
Questions for the GMs:
For Erick Blasco, who will get the start today, Brandon Boissiere or Luis Mata?
Why did you designate Mike Serrano for assignment?
Citi Field isn’t a great park for power. Do you feel confident your offense can score well today?
For Ryan Morneau, your offense lacks slugging. Do you plan on making a move to get some more power on your team?
You’re only 19-26, but you’re also just 3.5 games out of first place. Do you plan on making a move to win the division or in you in more of a rebuilding mode?
Tony Gonzalez is only 2-7, while Fahid bin Naim has had success in the PBA bullpen and is now in the minors. Will we see Naim in the rotation before too long?
TRIVIA: Only two Rockies pitchers have had a season with more than 4 WAR. Michael Fulmer did it four times. Who is the only other Rockies pitcher to have a season with more than 4 WAR?
