Philadelphia Phillies (9-7) @ Milwaukee Brewers (7-8)
PHI: Jay Tudor (2-0, 4.67)
MIL: Roy Montgomery (0-2, 6.48)
Phillies 3 Key Stats
22: Jay Tudor strikeouts: Tudor has a 4.67 ERA, right in line with his career ERA totals, which have been between 4.56 and 4.86 his entire career. However, he has a 29.3 strikeout rate so far, easily a career high. It’s early, but his 22 strikeouts puts him on pace for 223, which would easily clear his career high of 151. Tudor’s command has really gotten sharper the last two years, which means his improved strikeout numbers may be real. Today versus Milwaukee will be a real test of that.
.193: Luis Morales’ Average: Morales tweaked his rib cage on April 5th, and it’s led to some weird numbers. Despite his strained rib cage, Stud homered the next day and homered yesterday. His power is there, but his average has suffered. It’s unlike how the average player would react to a strained rib cage muscle, but then again Morales is no average player—he’s a Stud. Doctors say he’ll be affected for two more weeks. Maybe he’ll have another no hit or one hit game, or maybe he’ll hit another homer.
15: Alex Agurre’s RBIs: Philadelphia has needed some extra production with Luis Robert elsewhere and Allen Whitmore on the IL. They’ve gotten it from Agurre. Agurre has played over 100 games the last two years, but he’s only had 34 RBIs each year. He’s already halfway there this year after a couple of weeks. He only has a single homer, but a .313 average helps. More specifically, a .391 average with runners in scoring position helps. Milwaukee shouldn’t put runners on ahead of Agurre, he’ll knock them home.
Brewers 3 Key Stats
7: Brewers hitters hitting .172 or lower: Milwaukee has the worst average in the league at .195, and it’s easy to see why. Several hitters are off to atrocious starts. Yes, Manel Alberty and Roberto Sarmiento are bit players, but Luis Rivera, a former All-Star, is hitting 3-41. Greg Jacks was the 2026 NL MVP and was an All-Star as recently as 2029. He’s batting .116. A number of Brewers veterans are aging out of their prime, meaning this could be ill-timed cold stretches, or the beginning of a decline.
8.1: Roy Montgomery innings this year: Montgomery was suspended April 6th for instigating a brawl. It’s actually questionable whether Montgomery intended to hit Arturo Reineri, given that Montgomery plunked him on an 0-2 count, and his high intelligence, low leadership personality doesn’t strike as someone who would hit a batter on purpose. However, it’s the second time Montgomery has gotten a six game suspension for brawling. Both he and Arturo Reineri will be back in action, making for a potential fireworks show when they face off.
0: Seasons with the Brewers for Hitting Coach Ernesto Martinez before this year: Martinez has an exceptional track record as a minor league coach with four titles and five playoff appearances in five seasons with the Dominica Parrots. Before that, he made the playoffs two of three years for Biloxi, and prior to that, earned a playoff berth his only year with Wisconsin. He has years of success in Milwaukee’s minor league system. However, he’s a coach who has favored prospects his whole career. Milwaukee is a veteran-laden team, and their veterans may not be responding to Martinez’ tutelage. This may not be his last stint in Milwaukee’s organization, but it may be his last year with the big club.
Questions for the GMs:
For Matt Grubs, Luis Morales has hit for power, but his defense hasn’t been great, and he’s not hitting for average. Any thoughts of putting him on the IL for his rib cage to heal?
Jay Tudor looks like a different guy? What has gotten into him recently that’s made him such a strikeout arm?
Arturo Reineri gets a shot to face off against Roy Montgomery. Any hard feelings there or was it just emotions getting the best of him?
For Luke Grimmelbein, Ernesto Martinez has served you well in Short-A. Do you feel he’s the right fit for the Brewers though, given the struggles your hitters have had?
Micah Fortune has four homers and a .351 average go far. Will he still have a role when Mike Perches returns?
Martinez won four titles in five years for Dominica, favoring prospects. The new Parrots manager, Byung-Yong Chae, looks like he favors veterans—of which there will be few of in Short-A. Why hire the long time mediocre KBO reliever?
