New York Mets (48-29) @ San Francisco Giants (40-37)
NYM: Kevin Truitt (5-4, 3.26)
SF: Danny Galabeas (4-5, 3.87)
Mets 3 Key Stats
20: wins in 23 games scoring 6 or more runs: The Mets pitching has been exceptional this year, but the offense has been only average. The team is only ninth in runs scored, and seventh in OPS. When they get a good amount of runs—six—they win almost every time, 87%. When they score fewer than six runs, they’re 28-26. San Francisco is only 10th in runs allowed, so the Mets have a chance to score more than five runs today.
76: Ozzie Albies’ OPS+: Albies used to be a star and had 13.5 WAR in 2026 and 2027. He led the league in triples in 2026 and hit .337 in 2027. However, that’s the last year he’s had an above average OPS+. An .820 OPS in 2027 dropped to .705 in 2028, to a brutal .591 mark in 2029. His average has suffered, ranging from .269 to .235, and he has just five homers since 2029. He still plays strong defense, but he’s become a negative offensive player. The Mets can use him turning things around to boost their offense.
1: Home run for Dansby Swanson: The Mets acquired Swanson to boost their offense, and Swanson has helped a little bit. He has a strong .299 average with a healthy amount of walks giving him a .364 OBP as a Met, plus a nearly .400 mark as an Astro. However, the power hasn’t come. Swanson hasn’t ever hit for a huge amount of power, usually in the teens for homers, but when he’s going well he’ll club at least 30 doubles. This year, he has a single homer as a Met and a single homer as an Astro. The doubles haven’t come either, as he has just 11 with both teams. He’s hitting, but the Mets need some more power and would appreciate if Swanson would be able to hit for some pop.
Giants 3 Key Stats
5.57: San Francisco’s bullpen ERA: The Giants have the worst bullpen ERA in the National League, a shocking fact based on their history. Always a team with an excellent staff—including the pen—San Francisco’s pitching has not been up to their standards. The starting staff is sixth in ERA, so it’s the pen that’s been the huge problem. Shamar Polite had a 2.95 ERA that’s up to 6.61, Tim Johnson’s 3.26 ERA is now 7.29, and Alex McKee’s 2.17 mark last year has turned into a 4.03 number. Ivan Silva is a youngster who has had a disappointing year, and former starters Rich Sparks and Tristan Casa haven’t been great either. The struggling bullpen is a key reason why the Giants are only fourth in the NL West.
4: Hitters batting over .300: The Giants offense is still an elite unit. Aaron Allen’s .320 has been done in only 55 plate appearances, but San Francisco’s other three hitters hitting over .300 have a larger sample size. David Kouns is partying like it’s 2028, as his .317 average is his highest since his 217 hits three years ago led the league and resulted in a .337 average. Zipper Willemsen has a .319 average with 18 homers as he’s fully become an offensive beast, while Juan Campos is having an MVP caliber year with a .307 average and 27 homers. It’s a strong lineup, and even New York’s staff will have a tough time navigating it if not precise.
7: Starts for Aaron Allen: The Giants slugger thought he might be in for more playing time this year, but it hasn’t happened. He’s played in 31 games due to his pinch hitting ability, but has started just seven of San Francisco’s 77 games. Allen is unhappy with his role, not even seeing action with Federico Pando injured. A strong clubhouse will keep Alen from being a distraction, but it seems best for all parties if Allen finds a new home.
Questions for the GMs:
For Ryan Morneau, the way your offense and pitching have gone, have you given any thought to trading an arm for a bat at the trade deadline?
You recently brought aboard Jesus B. Sanchz and Gavin Lux. What do you expect from them the last half of the year?
You were looking to trade Mark Warf most of the year. Are you still shopping him?
For Vic Black, your bullpen has not been up to the standards set by prior Giants bullpens. What’s been the culprit?
Luis Castillo has a bad back. Will he play today?
Aaron Allen looks to be extremely angry with his playing time. Will you look to get him more starts?
