Detroit Tigers (13-28) @ Seattle Mariners (30-11)
DET: ?? (?-?, ?.??)
SEA: Stephen Marchant (6-1, 3.12)
The Seattle Mariners finally stopped bludgeoning teams, managing merely a split last week with their two opponents, a two-game split with the NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers, and a four-game draw with a very talented Cleveland Indians team. This is what it takes to consider a bad week for Seattle. Merely splitting four games against a challenging schedule. The team has the AL’s best offense and second best run prevention as they look like a complete team. Only two regulars are batting under .272 and six have at least six homers. The outfield is one of the best in baseball. Tony Sierra is hitting .272 with 10 doubles and 11 homers. Angelo Santiago is hitting .279 with eight homers. Raimfer Salinas is batting .299 with eight homers and a 6.3 zone rating. Seattle gets so much production from that trio.
They’ll face a Detroit Tigers team that moved to a bullpen-centric approach, but hasn’t seen the strategy bear fruit. Detroit is dead last in runs allowed and has eight pitchers with an ERA of 5.28 or higher. The Tigers have played five extra inning games so far, stretching the staff, but the team is 0-5 in those games as the pitchers haven’t been able to shut opponents down late.
Detroit’s changed its offense to a unit devoid of power, to one with power, but no patience. The change has been reasonably effective—the team is seventh in runs scored despite being last in OBP. John Lacy has been a huge edition as the playoff hero for Boston has 10 homers and 30 RBIs in the early going, but the team has also trotted out three players hitting under .200. If Detroit can find some average or pitching, they can be respectable, but they haven’t found it so far.
Questions for the GMs:
For David Boyer, your bullpen-only approach hasn’t succeeded this year. What’s prevented it from being successful?
You have some spots in your lineup that aren’t performing. Will you make any substitutions to get more offense in some of your dead spots?
Alex Torres will miss at least a month. Who will take his place on the roster?
For Jay Bigs, Mike Holbrook is on rehab assignment. Can we expect to see him this week?
Bryce Zettel has really struggled this year, continuing a pattern of playing well in odd-numbered years, and struggling in even-numbered years. Do you make anything of it?
Stephen Marchant is having a great year. Were you surprised he was made available after helping Boston win a title?
TRIVIA: Antonio Zamora pitched in an astounding 102 games last year. Who is the only pitcher to pitch in more games in a single season?
