Philadelphia Phillies (36-46) @ Chicago Cubs (84-80)
PHI: Shane Baz: (5-7, 5.62)
CHC: Stanley Nieman (4-6, 4.42)
The last two years have been seasons from hell for Philadelphia, as the club just hasn’t found a way to win. They won only 77 games last year, a year following a 100-win campaign, and only their second losing season since 2019. This year, the team is even worse—36-46, despite having the Pythagorean record of a .500 team.
Losing Seth Beer was always going to be a huge blow, but the stars have produced. Bobby Siegel leads the league with 32 homers and 89 RBIs, having an absolutely massive campaign. Royce Lewis is hitting.294 with 15 steals and some pop. Destiny Galemberti is hitting .295 with a league-leading 33 steals. Brian Radcliffe is on pace for 40 doubles and 40 homers. Despite that, the offense is only seventh as the bottom of the order has provided nothing.
Disappointing starter Shane Baz is carrying a 5.62 ERA into the contest as righties are running a .308 average off him. That’s tough, considering the Chicago Cubs have the second best offense in the NL. Despite that, Chicago had a dreadful June, going 10-18 against a tough schedule, but Chicago just dropped two of three in Cincinnati to begin this month. They went from a comfortable Wild Card team to 3 back of San Diego in a tight second NL Wild Card race. They’ll need to stack wins again, and soon, if they want to stack a second straight playoff appearance on the board.
Questions for the GMs:
For Matt Grubs, disappointing season so far. Why has it sputtered in the first half for you?
Last year was a disappointing year for Destiny Galemberti. Is his start to the year something you’re expecting from him moving forward, or are you counting on more production from him?
You have a lot of arbitration eligible players, but nobody with a guaranteed contract above the minimum next year aside for Brian Villanueve. Can we expect you to run it back or make wholesale changes for 2033?
For Jon Richardson, it’s been a rough summer for your club. Where are things falling apart after such a good start?
Meqran Kwada has a strained oblique. With the All-Star Break coming up, will he play through his injury or spend time on the IL?
Basket Case Benoit broke his foot. Who will replace him in the roster and the lineup?
TRIVIA: Who is the only player to hit at least 50 doubles in a season with at least 40 homers?
