Philadelphia Phillies (48-57) @ Washington Nationals (50-56)
PHI: Doug Dombrowski (5-7, 4.22)
WAS: Sixto Sanchez (3-5, 4.85)
Despite not playing a team with a winning record since the All Star Break, and having 12 of their 16 games come against clubs in fourth or fifth place in their divisions, the Philadelphia Phillies have gone 7-9 in the second half, effectively ending any hope at a run to the division. The team dealt away Ron Dahl last week and is effectively playing out the string.
It’s disappointing as the team is third in offense as Bobby Siegel continues to etch his name into the record books. With a .303 average, 40 homers, and 113 RBI’s thus far, he’s on pace to tie Seth Beer for most homers in in a season by a Philly, and he’s on pace to set the PBA single-season RBI record. Philadelphia has the second worst starter’s ERA in the league though, so Siegel’s fireworks won’t continue in October.
Philadelphia will take on a Washington Nationals team that has been plucky, but has an even worse pitching staff. The Nationals are 14th in the league in runs against, holding back a respectable offense. Washington has a lot of money tied up in pitching prospects as Vic Davies, Jara Ojo, and Tsuro Toguchi are making a combined $36.5 million, with Davies making the least of the three, but being the only one to provide positive PBA WAR. Toguchi is making $23.2 million, but is still in Triple-A.
They’ve gotten good play from their journeymen outfield though as R.J. Jarrett, Trent Clark, and Julio B. Rodriguez have all provided 2.9 WAR despite being fairly unheralded and on the wrong side of 30. They’ll be players to watch today.
Questions for the GMs:
For Matt Grubs, Destiny is banged up with hamstring strain. Who will replace him on the roster and in the lineup?
Jose Quesada needs a break with a dead arm. Who will take his place on the roster and in the rotation?
You have an open roster spot with the Dahl trade. Who will get his spot on the roster?
For Creig McBride, what are you most interested to learn about your team over the second half of this season?
You’re a sub-.500 team with a lot of young pitchers and a lot of older hitters. What will be your expected roster strategy heading into next year?
Chris Billings has a .640 OPS and has -0.2 WAR. Why did you claim him off of waivers this year?
TRIVIA: Washington has four pitchers who have made at least 271 career starts for the team—Franklin E. Perz with 366, Joe Ross with 355, Eric Pena with 292, and Peter Solomon with 271. Who is the only other PBA team with four pitchers who have made 200 starts for the club?
