Milwaukee Brewers (71-41) @ Chicago Cubs (59-55)
MIL: Branden Andexler (8-7, 5.08)
CHC: Bernie Templet (1-5, 6.75)
The Chicago Cubs have had a disappointing season as they were expected to contend for the NL Central crown, but have hovered around .500 most of the year. Worse, their star, Isaiah High, will miss the rest of the year, while elite bat Juan Castoreno continues to miss time with an elbow strain. The Cubs find themselves 19 back in the division, and six back in the Wild Card, with arguably their best player out for the year. It’s not an envious spot to be in.
The Cubs have managed to score the second most runs in the NL despite some holes in the roster, so their struggles are more tied to the pitching. Tonight’s starter, Bernie Templet, just got roughed up in Coors Field and now has a 6.75 ERA as he’s struggled to find his command after major surgery last year. Their closer David Janes has blown six of 27 save opportunities and has a 2-7 record with a 7.02 ERA. Chicago needs those two to be better if they want to compete for a playoff spot.
The Milwaukee Brewers, meanwhile, have a playoff spot all but assured as the first Wild Card. Despite the tragic news that Tim Kierstead will not throw a baseball again, the Brewers remain first in the NL in ERA. It’s remarkable, given a second head of Cerberus has struggled this year. Tonight’s starter, Scruffy Andexler, is having easily the worst year of his career with a 5.08 ERA. His strikeout rate is the lowest of his career, his ground ball rate is the lowest since his rookie year, and lefties have begun to tag him for homers at a reasonable clip. There will be extra pressure on Andexler to find his mojo in the postseason if Milwaukee wants to make a deep playoff run.
Questions for the GMs:
For Luke Grimmelbein, Nick Rollins is out with a torn ligament in his thumb. Who will replace him in the lineup and on the roster?
Kenny McMahon is on a rehab assignment. Could we expect to see him today?
Did you expect The Dominator, Sergio Parra, to have such a dominating year for you as a Rule V pick?
For Jon Richardson, Isaiah High will miss the season, a devastating blow. Who will replace him on the roster and in the lineup today?
David Janes has had a rough year. Any thoughts of giving someone else the ball in the ninth?
Franklin Soto has a 1.03 ERA in Iowa. Any chance we see him down the stretch?
TRIVIA: The Chicago Cubs are currently tied with three other teams with Zero OSA Top Farm System Points. Who are the three teams they’re tied with?
