Baltimore Orioles (69-61) @ Toronto Blue Jays (80-50)
BAL: Adam Hall (8-8 5.52)
TOR: Danny Richardson (12-5, 3.09)
The Baltimore Orioles remain in the hunt for a Wild Card spot, but haven’t been able to claw back the losses they suffered during a brutal July when they went 9-14. They’ve done well in August, but their closing stretch is brutal. If they’re going to make a run to the postseason, they’re going to have to earn it.
Their offense has proven it's strong. The club is fourth in the league in runs, led by an attention-grabbing year from Mike Fitzgerald. He’s always been a fantastic producer, but tough pitching and tough parks in the NL West suppressed his numbers. He has a chance at 60 homers and 140 RBIs in a friendlier park this year.
He’s supported by Wessel Russchen, whose late May injury really set the club back. He’s not having a classic MVP year like in years past, but he’s still hitting .275 with power, speed, and defense in Center Field.
The club is only 11th in runs allowed though, and will need a good outing from Bushy Hall. The righty failed in his half year in Chicago with the White Sox, and has mostly worked out of the pen in Baltimore. He allowed four runs in 5 innings against the Angels in his last start, and will need to be better to produce against a strong Toronto Blue Jays team.
After a tough start to the month, Toronto has come on strong the last few weeks against an easy schedule. They have a shot at winning the AL East if they can put together a strong final month. They’ve played some tough games with Baltimore this year—three of their 10 contests have gone to extra innings, and none of their 10 contests have been decided by more than two runs.
They’ll send Danny Richardson to the mound and the ace is having another excellent year with 12-5 record and a 3.09 ERA, in the top 10 in both wins and ERA. He’s dominated righties this year, but Baltimore’s best hitters are left-handed. He’s had three starts against Baltimore this year—a 7 inning, 2-run gem at home, a 4.1 inning, 4-run stinker at home, and a weird start in Baltimore where he allowed only two hits and two runs in 5.1, but four runs.
Questions for the GMs:
For Dan Wagner, Mike Floyd and Nick Gordon have day to day injuries that should heal quickly, but should affect them today. Will they be in the lineup?
Will Mike Siani spend any time on the IL with his injury?
Bushy Hall back in the rotation. Why didn’t he join the rotation immediately after you traded for him?
For Aaron Dunham, how has the Ron Dahl trade been working out for you?
Rookie Mike Robles debuted last week with a strong week. Will he remain your starting Center Fielder moving forward?
Matt Aceto has been benched as he’s fallen off after a good start. What would it take for him to reenter the lineup?
TRIVIA: Mike Fitzgerald’s 268 career homers puts him exactly 50th in the career home run leaderboard. Who is the only player to have ever played for San Diego with more career homers?
