San Francisco Giants (49-35) @ San Diego Padres (46-37)
SF: Evan Orcutt (5-4, 4.24)
SD: Daizo Matsumoto (5-5, 5.56)
In a tight NL West, the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres are each just a handful of games back of the division lead. Each game for these two is an important one to grab with the separation between first and fourth just four games—and even more so in games against one another.
The Giants have the best rotation in the NL. Tonight’s arm, Stud Orcutt, is the worst on the team this year, and he merely put up 5.8 WAR last year, finishing third in Cy Young voting. He’s been a little more homer prone this year compared to last resulting in his ERA jumping from 4.01 to 4.24, but it’s still plenty good. He’s allowed multiple long balls just once all season in 15 starts.
He’ll take on a Padres team that also have good arms. Stephan Marchant and Chris Davis are on fire and already have double digit wins, Genghis Khan was recently signed and has pitched well, but they’ll need tonight’s starter to step up and really complete the rotation. Daizo Matsumoto was solid last year despite a poor record, producing a 3.73 ERA despite going 6-14. This year the record is better—5-5—but the ERA is worse—5.56. BABIP is playing a big role with a 75 point swing worse this season over last, so the Padres will need to get better defense behind him to give them as much of a chance as possible to knock off the powerful Giants.
Questions for the GMs:
For Michael Strosko, Shamar Polite is hurt. Who will take his spot in the rotation?
David Kouns is day to day with an oblique injury. Will he spend some time on the IL?
Caleb Swingley is on a rehab assignment. Will we see him in the PBA when it expires?
For Dalton Timmerman, Jo Adell has played some great defense for you, but hasn’t hit at all. Will you look to upgrade at Center Field at the deadline?
John Yancey has been ice cold since June 10, but his season numbers are great, and he has a chance at a Gold Glove. How do you evaluate his season so far?
Last year was a fever dream that saw you work your way to a World Series. While many expected a reality check this year, your club has remained very strong. How have you made sure last year wasn’t a flash in the pan?
TRIVIA: What pitcher does Jeren Kendall have the most career hits against?
