Athletics/ White Sox deal

Jesse Winker OF (ml)
Josh Phegley C (ml, waivers)

White Sox send:

Joe Jiminez RP (ml)

A deal we had to make for financial reasons.


The arbitrator absolutely screwed us, and Phegley's $4.6m for 163 plate appearances of mediocrity was particularly harsh. Winker's a very good ML player, so it's rough having to let him go for an average reliever but moving $6.5m and the next couple of years of salary seems like the right thing to do and gets us under budget. 

Thanks to the ChiSox for the quick and easy deal - and apologies to the two other teams who I left in the middle of negotiations on Winker - the money part of this deal made too much sense.

I accept, Phegley's leadership will be appreciated in our clubhouse and his right-handedness will be welcome in the field.

Winker gives us a nice back up corner outfielder and a DH platoon option, we think Winker could play 1B in a pinch.
