New York Yankees (61-71) @ Seattle Mariners (84-47)
NYY: Danny Salazar (8-11, 5.92)
SEA: Woo-Seok Ko (16-9, 3.24)
The Seattle Mariners haven’t had the best August. They’re 8-12 in the month so far, and with an easy schedule to close the year, are facing their most important stretch yet. They have a road trip to face the Rangers and Cubs upcoming, and with a 4.5 game lead on the Rangers, this stretch could determine the season.
Before that, Seattle will face a dangerous but disappointing New York Yankees team in the Game of the Week.
Seattle hasn’t had the best August and injuries have played a part. Bullpen ace Ryan Dull went down in early August, Jeifry Nunez went down with a minor injury and has been shelved until he’s 100%. On Saturday though, they lost Lucius Fox to a torn abdominal muscle that will shelve him for the rest of the regular season. That will force the Mariners to scramble to round out their infield.
Seattle will likely move Aramis Ademan to Shorststop and start Isaac Paredas at Second Base. The offense might improve, but Fox was such a difference making defender that his loss will give Seattle’s pitching staff more problems.
Fortunately for the Mariners, Woo-Seok Ko is the American League’s best pitcher at making sure hitters don’t put balls in play. Ko is the single-game PBA strikeout king after he fanned 20 Astros early in the year. Ko was somehow left unprotected in the Rule V draft and was somehow cut by a Korean League team, but his ability to throw 98 exactly where he wants to is a huge problem for hitters. Mix in a buckling curveball and three other offerings to keep hitters guessing, and he’s turned into an All-Star.
The bullpen may be more of an issue. Outside of top closer Michael Lorenzen, only one reliever has thrown more strikeouts than innings, and that’s Dazon Cole with 31 whiffs in 30.1 innings. On the whole it’s a very strong bullpen, second in AL ERA, but the loss of a good defender may affect it more than others, especially with Ryan Dull on the IL.
The Yankees, meanwhile, have not had the year they wanted. Terrible results in one-run games and extra innings, plus an awful rotation and poor defense have left them well under .500. Their offense has been fantastic though. They’re second in home runs, which is expected, but also fourth in BABIP. They’re mid-pack in strikeout rate, which may help Ko at least.
Seattle will have to be careful with Gleyber Torres, who may be able to capture his first Platinum Stick this year. Torres is hitting .321 with 33 home runs and 23 stolen bases. He’s a game-changer in a game-changing offense, and can beat Seattle all on his own.
Questions for the GMs:
For Greg Masceri, Dustin Fowler has a sore Achilles. Will he start today?
Jio Orozco is a new member of your team. He’s an older rookie, 27 years old. What are you looking for from him down the stretch?
With the playoffs no longer an option, what are you looking to see from your team going forward?
For Jeff Thomas, who will be the replacement in your lineup and roster for Fox?
How has your bullpen looked to you since Dull went down?
You made a few moves to change around your corner outfield. How has it looked to you since the trade deadline?
