Seattle Mariners (36-18) @ New York Yankees (21-32)
SEA: Tomoyuki Sugano (8-0, 2.54)
NYY: Tristan Beck (2-1, 7.74)
The Seattle Mariners paid Tomoyuki Sugano a lot of money to bolster their rotation prior to the 2024 season. The legendary Japanese pitcher had a stellar regular season, but still had a relatively high 3.92 ERA. He then got bombed in the playoffs, allowing seven runs in the ALDS in just 2 innings.
The 35-year-old, under contract for four more years after this one, was under some pressure to rebound in 2025—and boy has he rebounding. Sugano is 8-0 with a 2.54 ERA and 0.89 WHIP, throwing his name in the hat early as a possible Cy Young candidate.
Sugano will look to continue his strong season when the Seattle Mariners take on the New York Yankees in the Game of the Week.
Sugano isn’t the only Japanese import who had down 2024, but is playing great baseball in 2025. Tomoya Mori had a strong second half to keep his 2024 season from being a disaster, but he was the AL MVP in 2023, and the first player to win an MVP in two different leagues. His average dropped 50 points, he smacked 11 fewer home runs, and while his final numbers were solid, he was a far cry from the dominating force of 2023. As he declined, Seattle’s offense lacked a second star to back up Francisco DeJesus.
Mori this year is back up to a .295 average. He already has 15 home runs, putting him on pace for 45. With Seattle’s top of the order getting on base, Mori has 40 RBIs already. No Catcher is anywhere close to the production he’s providing.
With Mori playing well, it’s allowed protection for Francisco DeJesus to thrive. The superstar is on pace for the best year of his career. DeJesus is hitting .328, which would blow away his career high of .283. His .422 OBP would blow away his career high of .390. He had 58 Home Runs and 149 RBIs last year, both of which would be blown away by the 69 home runs and 171 RBIs he’s on pace for this year. DeJesus has back to back Silver Slugger Awards, but he may have the inside track for AL MVP.
They’ll take on a Yankees team that has the worst staff in baseball, with Tristan Beck getting the ball today. Beck has a 7.74 ERA and hasn’t shown he can be an effective big leaguer.
Questions for the GMs:
For Jeff Thomas, you called up Ivan Johnson to play Shortstop for you recently. How has that move worked out?
Charlie Blackmon was recently activated off the IL. How has he looked to you?
Anyelo Luna with 3 scoreless in the series so far. Why has he been so effective against the Yankees?
TRIVIA: Who has committed the most errors all-time in Seattle Mariners history.
