Los Angeles Angels (18-40) @ Texas Rangers (31-28)
LAA: Chris Rodriguez (1-5, 6.25)
TEX: Marcus Stroman (6-2, 2.30)
It’s been a long time in the desert for the Los Angeles Angels. They cleared some bad money off their books this season, and signed some talented players, but it’s only amounted to an 18-40 record.
They’ll try to turn things around against the home frontrunning Texas Rangers in the Game of the Week.
The Angels are last in offense and second to last in run prevention as they once again bring up the rear of the American League. Previous bottom feeders in Cleveland and Boston have shown hope this season of better days, but those flashes have not materialized for the Angels. The club still suffers from a profound lack of talent throughout its system.
The only offensive players OSA ranks in the top half of the league for their position are Patrick Leonard, Victor Caratini and Willy Adames. Of those, only Leonard is a true force, but he’s been confoundingly playing Third Base all season. The lead-footed slugger has a -18.1 Zone Rating, and if he continues at this pace, will challenge Mike Floyd as the biggest defensive madman in league history.
Financial woes have sapped the Angeles of potential draft picks as well. Only four players selected in the fourth round or earlier were signed the past four years, robbing the team of young talent. The hope is that with the first pick in the draft, and six picks in the first 100, the Angels can begin to rebuild their talent base.
They’ll take on a Rangers team that plays as hot as the Texas Sun when in Arlington. The Rangers are 21-10 at home, compared to 10-18 on the road, and today’s game is in Arlington. They’ll be rolling out Marcus Stroman who fired a Shutout on National TV a few weeks back against the defending champion Blue Jays. Still, the Angels aren’t a club that get a lot of exposure, and it would be a source of great pride were they able to knock off the Rangers.
Questions for the GMs:
For Robert Savard, rumor has it you’re going with Steve Gifford in the first round of the draft. What do you see in him?
Why do you have Patrick Leonard at Third Base?
Tonight’s starter, Chris Rodriguez, what do you like about him?
For Clayton Piper, how do you feel your Third Basemen and Right Fielders have fared with Kyle Lewis and Nick Gordon on the shelf?
Why does your club play so much better at home?
You didn’t have a pick in the first two rounds. How do you feel about your draft?
