When the Tigers couldn't trade their ageing stars (Verlander, Cabrera, et al) they opted to trade their young stars (Norris, and Fulmer) in hopes of landing quantity and quality players that might be a factor 2-3 years out. Little consideration was given to who would fill the roster spots vacated by the pair of promising hurlers as there were a bevy of mediocre, journeymen type arms to select from in AAA Toledo.
Buck Farmer certainly couldn't distinguish himself from the array of Mudhen pitchers but nevertheless he got the call up on April 6 and did a commendable job lasting six innings while surrendering just two runs. He followed that up with three more 6.0 IP starts and was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA after four starts. That he would not maintain this pace for the rest of the year is understandable but surprisingly he won 10 games and lost 12. His ERA ended up at 3.89, better than J.V., Zimmerman, or any other Detroit Tiger pitcher.
So, the question is, 'does the Buck stop here?' Or, does he take the success he enjoyed in 2017 and parlay it into an even better 2018 season? We know he is still young (26), durable, affordable. and under team control for four more years so Farmer will get ample opportunity to pitch for the Detroit Tigers in the upcoming years.
