St. Louis Cardinals (0-0) @ Milwaukee Brewers (0-0)
STL: Osiris German (0-0, 0.00)
MIL: Mike Arnold (0-0, 0.00)
Cardinals 5 Key Stats
7: The number of new starters on the Cardinals compared to last year.
91: Walks last year for Sergio Ochoa. The Cardinals could really use an ace, but Ochoa can’t be that player if his walks are so high. Right now, he’s relegated to a bullpen role in St. Louis.
35: Doubles by Franklin Barreto last year, lowest since 2017. Nonetheless, it’s a healthy total and Barreto is still a doubles threat.
19: Games played last season by Juan Soto due to jury duty in the Dominican Republic. His ability to avoid civic responsibility will be a small subplot for the Cardinals this year.
1.4: The lowest HR/9 number Osiris German has ever allowed in a season. The Cardinals will need him to be better about limiting the long ball if they want to compete with Milwaukee tonight.
Brewers 5 Key Stats
9.0: Mike Arnold’s WAR last year, third best in a season. Arnold led the league in WAR, but also win WHIP at 0.90, and ERA at 2.47. Hawkeye will look to begin 2027 with a gem.
8: The consecutive seasons Edwin Diaz had 30+ saves for the Brewers. Milwaukee will look to a committee to close games this year. The last time Diaz wasn’t on the mound for the ninth inning, Corey Knebel locked down 31 Saves in 2018.
.232: Career Batting Average for Quadir Murriel. The former Met will likely start Milwaukee’s opener at Second Base, but will need to hit better to keep the spot.
3: Mike Perches’ home run total last year. A broken knee robbed Perches of most of 2026, but he blasted 48 home runs in his rookie year in 2025. Fully recovered, the Brewers could be even better than last year with Perches in the lineup.
15: Doubles hit by Nate Sprague last year. With Elih Marrero out for the first few games, Sprague will have the starting Catching job. He split duties last year and did a nice job with a .405 Slugging percentage, boosted by nine homers and 15 doubles in 71 Games. Sprague is one of the better backup catchers in the league, and if he can get his OBP above .300, could turn into one of the better starting ones.
Questions for the GMs:
For Tim Lentz, the Cardinals only faced Hawkeye twice last year, but he allowed one run and struck out 25 Cardinals in 13.2 innings. How do you produce offense against him?
Most of the veteran contracts you signed this offseason are for one or two seasons, many with team options. How important was team control to your work this offseason?
You had a lot of fun ads airing over the offseason featuring Chris Rosencutter and Josh Weyer most prominently. How do you feel about the fans in your market shutting things down?
For Luke Grimmelbein, it’s been leaked that Mark Attanasio is upset Edwin Diaz isn’t on the team anymore. How do you feel about losing your star closer?
Speaking of closers, you’ve been upset with Blayne Enlow’s playoff performances in the past. He’s one of the arms who will take on more responsibility this year. How much faith do you have in him?
Do you feel Quadir Murriel has the bat necessary to play as your starting Second Baseman?
TRIVIA: Edwin Diaz has four career Saves for the Puerto Rico National Team. Who is he tied with for most career Saves for the Puerto Rican National Team?
