Philadelphia Phillies (13-8) @ New York Mets (6-15)
PHI: Jhoan Duran (2-0, 3.86)
NYM: Luis Morillo (1-0, 4.32)
Phillies 5 Key Stats:
0.74: Joe Ferland’s ERA. Philadelphia’s bullpen has been leaky at key moments throughout the decade, but Joe Ferland has been dominant to start the year. With a league-leading 7 Saves, Matt Grubs may not need antacids in the ninth inning anymore.
88: The percentage of Darrick Hall’s hits that have been home runs this year. Hall has become a caricature of himself, hitting .121 with a 37% strikeout rate, and just eight hits. However, he has seven home runs, a double, and has knocked home 12 runners.
1: Run allowed by Jhoan Duran in his start against the Mets last week. Duran went 5.1 innings and allowed eight hits and two walks, but he didn’t give up a home run, struck out five, and got the Mets to hit 0-7 with runners in scoring position when he was on the mound.
.293: Joe DeCarlo’s average. After a down year in average for Baltimore last season, DeCarlo is hitting nearly 50 points higher this year. He’s on pace for 46 home runs and 69 doubles, taking nicely to Citizens Bank Park.
.194: Luis Morales’ batting average. Stud also has just one home run this year, and has scored only five times. Morales had a spectacular 2025, and a solid, injury-wracked 2026. The Phillies expect him to be a superstar to win a tough NL East though, and Morales hasn’t hit the lofty heights he perhaps unfairly set his rookie year.
Mets 5 Key Stats:
2-7: The Mets record on one-run games. They went 34-22 in that category in 2026, fueling their NL East title.
.519: Juan Rosa’s average in his first week of the year. The Mets were getting nothing offensively from Arturo Ramirez and made a change to juice the offense. The Mets went 4-2 last week as a result, with one of the losses coming in extra innings.
.280: Mets team on-base percentage. The Mets are last in average and second-to-last in walk rate in the early going, a tough way to make a living. They’re fifth in home runs, but with all those shots being solo shots, they haven’t been able to break out offensively.
9: Strikeouts by Luis Morillo in his first career start. Morillo faced the Phillies last Wednesday and limited them to four runs in 8.1 innings. With a big lead, he stayed in worked into the ninth. He didn’t walk a batter and allowed just seven hits.
9: Home Runs by Luis Morales this year. Morales had intriguing seasons the past two years, but aside from 29 home runs last year, he wasn’t able to put everything together. His OBP just cracked .300 and his average was only .217 despite the power. This year, he’s still hitting for power, but his average has also increased to .321. If he’s able to marry his power with a respectable average, he can be an All-Star this year.
Questions for the GMs:
For Matt Grubs, Mickey Moniak is a little banged up with knee inflammation. Will we see him today?
An almost permanent question, what to make of Darrick Hall? The power is there, but the average is as bad as ever.
Your setup and middle relief corps has been shaky, but Joe Ferland has been great in the ninth. How do you feel about your bullpen as a whole?
For Jeff McKinney, Luis Castaneda started for you and really struggled, finding his way to the bench. Will he be sent down, will he eventually start again, or is a backup role his new permanent destination for the near to mid-term?
You have a deep staff, why did you go with Luis Morillo as your fifth starter?
You didn’t play Shohei Otani as a position player for the first few weeks. What went into that decision?
TRIVIA: Two players named Luis have hit at least .310 in a season. Who are those two players?
