Detroit Tigers (29-24) @ Baltimore Orioles (29-26)
DET: Jamie Harrington (3-8, 8.18)
BAL: Sam Carlson (3-3, 4.43)
Orioles 5 Key Stats
88: Home Runs by Orioles hitters, tops in the AL, and 17 more than second place Boston
2: The number of Orioles hitters with a .341 average and 14 home runs. Wessell Russchen leads the AL in WAR with a .345 average, 15 home runs, 17 doubles, six steals, and a league-leading 47 runs scored. Jadon Ancrum has backed him up with a .341 average, 14 home runs, and 43 RBIs. The duo has been incredibly prolific.
.199: Omar Baldo’s average. Baldo has been a nice surprise the last two years, but has started 50 of a possible 55 contests and is burned out as the only Catcher on the roster. Baltimore need sot give Baldo rest, or he’ll be a drain on their team.
6.86: Larry Price’s ERA, tops on the team. Baltimore has given the closer spot to Price, but with a 6.86 ERA, he hasn’t been effective.
.278: Francisco DeJesus’ Batting Average: With a solid mark, DeJesus has returned to being the ferocious hitter he was in Seattle after struggling to 1.7 WAR with a .235 average last year.
Tigers 5 Key Stats:
8: Losses by Jamie Harrington, tied for the most in the league. Harrington throws in the mid-90s, but his curveball is still developing, and his slider needs work. As a result, the prospect has been hit hard for an 8.20 ERA.
1.114: Roderick Dalton’s OPS. The Tigers will be without Dalton for a couple of weeks while he recovers from a bone bruise in his wrist. The injury saps Detroit’s lineup as Dalton is bay far their best hitter.
5-0: Detroit’s record in games decided by 2 runs or fewer the past two weeks. Since Dirty Tarin’s home run off Konnor Plinkington in the Game of the Week two weeks ago, Detroit has excelled when the margin was close, culminating in a comeback win over the Mets yesterday when Chad Lewin delivered a pinch hit two-run triple in the eighth inning to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Detroit has used that good play to close to within 4.5 of the AL Central-leading Twins.
8-8: Detroit’s road record against teams with winning records as of today. Being even on the road against winning clubs can be seen as a hallmark of a good club. This bodes well for Detroit as their division has four winning clubs. They’ll take on another winning team on the road in Baltimore.
1: Run allowed by David Heide in his last 10.2 innings. Heide got off to a bit of a shaky start, but has been excellent of late. In fact, he’s been excellent on the whole against teams that aren’t the White Sox. He’s allowed seven runs, six earned against the White Sox in 1.1 innings this year. Against all other teams, he’s allowed two runs in 20 innings. As Baltimore is not Chicago, this bodes well for the Tigers.
Questions for the GMs:
For Vic Black, Omar Baldo has been your team’s only Catcher, and he’s been terrible. Why haven’t you gone with a second Catcher?
Your club is eighth in zone rating and has committed the fewest errors in the league. Why has your defense been better this year than seasons past?
Larry Price has been rough as a closer. Do you have any ideas of replacing him?
For Steve Cox 2 Roderick Dalton will be out a few weeks. Who will take his place on the roster and in the lineup?
Jamie Harrington is off to a brutal start. Do you have any notions of benching him or demoting him?
Dirty Tarin has had some big hits this year. Will he have more time in the lineup?
