Chicago White Sox (26-51) @ Boston Red Sox (55-25)
CHW: Sandy Alcantara (0-6, 4.50)
BOS: Andy DeShaw (5-4, 3.69)
White Sox 5 Key Stats
.247: Rafael Devers’ average. Devers lowest average in a season was 2018 when he hit .285. He’s been a pillar of high averages and immense power ever since. A 2022 MVP, a six-time Platinum Stick winner, and a future Hall-of-Famer, Devers has been one of the best players in PBA history. He has a .746 OPS this year with little production in the lineup, a key reason Chicago’s offense has sunk like a stone.
35: Andrew Benintendi’s starts. Chicago has played 77 games and Benintendi has started fewer than half of them. He’s been outstanding when he’s played, but will miss today’s game with a fractured hand.
16: Strikeouts for Sandy Alcantara in 38.1 innings as a starting pitcher. Alcantara has succeeded in this role thanks to a .224 BABIP. With 20 walks as a starter and a 1.7 HR/9 overall, it feels like he’s due for some painful regression.
5: Strikeouts by Carlos Rodon. Rodon has pitched 26 innings, is 0-2 with a 7.62 ERA, and has allowed 26 walks. He’s been one of the worst pitchers in baseball, but has at least three more seasons left on his contract.
2.96: David Robertson’s ERA. Robertson is the oldest pitcher in the league and has been effective on the mound. He’s allowed just a single homer and whiffed 26 hitters at age 27.1 innings at age 42.
Red Sox 5 Key Stats
.614: Joe Taylor’s Slugging Percentage. Taylor’s had a huge season in terms of extra base hits. He already has 25 doubles which leads the league, and 21 home runs which is fourth. He’s given Boston a special bat, which has fueled their ascent to the top of the AL.
1: Boston reliever with an ERA above 3.63. Four pitchers have ERAs in the 2s including Steve Hartman’s 2.21 ERA. The Red Sox have a collective bullpen ERA of 2.94, which leads the AL.
.302: Luis Villareal’s Average in June. Injuries have put Villareal’s bat in the lineup more often, and he’s started 17 games this month, after starting a combined 10 heading into the month. He’s made the most of his time, with the .302 average and four homers to keep Boston’s offense strong.
.327: Andres Gimenez’ Batting Average: Gimenez never hit above .261 in his career until last year with Philadelphia, where he hit .282. Gimenez has continued to build upon his improved hit tool, boosting his average to .327 this year. Gimenez already has four triples and 20 doubles, putting him position to notch career highs in those categories. By getting on base so often ahead of such powerful hitters, Gimenez has scored 51 runs, on pace for his first 100-run season.
10.8: Arturo Reineri’s Zone Rating. Reineri tops the AL in zone rating for players at any position. He won a Gold Glove in 2025, and is the favorite to capture the award this year.
Questions for the GMs:
For Steve Strzepek, your team has really struggled. Is it time to trade Benintendi and Devers and rebuild?
Gavin Lux will miss a month. Who will take his place in the lineup.
How long until we see Pat French back in the majors?
For Mike Ball, you obviously have history with the White Sox as their GM for eight seasons. How do you feel about the club’s struggles the last several years?
Who will take Juan Inzuna’s spot on the roster with him out a few more weeks.
Late in the offseason, a number of comp free agents were available. You pounced on them, foregoing draft picks in the process. How do you feel, taking advantage of the market’s inactivity to help add to what has been the best team in the American League this year?
