Los Angeles Angels (18-27) @ Kansas City Royals (29-17)
LAA: Mike Murrin (5-0, 1.34)
KC: Vincente Corado (2-3, 5.77)
Angels 5 Key Stats:
1.34: Mike Murrin’s ERA: Rhino Murrin leads the entire AL in ERA and is also 5-0, allowing one home run on the year. He’s one of the most exciting young phenoms in AL history, and is the best hope in years in leading Los Angeles out of the AL basement.
13: Kyle Barraclough’s Walks: Barraclough has been the definition of effectively wild. He’s accumulated those walks in 16 innings, and has just nine strikeouts. He’s issued only 10 hits however, and has an ERA of 2.25 with seven Saves.
32: Home Runs for Los Angeles: The Angels are last in the league in home runs, really missing the power they got from Patrick Leonard. The offense has not been good without their offensive juggernaut playing for the team anymore.
7.78: Jeff Susino’s Salt Lake City ERA: The Angels hope to pair Murrin with Susino to create a potent top of the rotation, but Susino has not been effective. His defense isn’t helping, but Susino made the pros in the same year he was drafted last year and produced decent numbers. If Susino can put things together and pair with Murrin, Los Angeles would have a devastating front-end rotation.
18: Games since Willy Adames started for Los Angeles: Despite barely playing in May, Adames has five home runs on the year and 20 RBIs. He also has five doubles to help fuel a .789 OPS. The Angels are starved for offense, so it’s a shock he’s not in the lineup. Los Angeles has gone 4-13 in May with Adames riding the bench.
Royals 5 Key Stats:
3: Times in his last five Starts Vincente Corado has allowed one run or fewer: Corado got off to a rough start, but allowed a run over 5.1 decent innings against the White Sox in Chicago April 25. He began May by getting rocked by Baltimore—no shame in that—and followed it up by rebounding with a one-run outing in 6 innings against Detroit the following start. He struggled with his command on the 12th, walking four and allowing four runs to the Twins in 4.2, but his last outing was his best one yet—7.2 innings of one-hit, one-run ball against Houston. Corado has pitched well against the weaker opponents on his schedule and the Angels certainly qualify.
14: Wins in 19 May games for Kansas City: After a sluggish start, Kansas City is playing great baseball. They’re coming off a 13th inning win vs the Dodgers with Jorge Vargas tying the game with a 13th inning double, and Xavier Edwards walking the Dodgers off with a 13th inning single. The Royals won the series and haven’t lost a series since April 24-27.
15: Consecutive Scoreless Games for Alex Claudio: The former Texas bullpen ace has thrived in his first season away from the Rangers, putting up a 1.53 ERA in the early going. Claudio has a 0.78 WHIP this year, something he’s always excelled at. If he qualified, his 1.06 career mark would be third All-Time. Lefties have a .234 OPS this year against him, and a career .530 mark in 1414 career plate appearances.
.188: Pal Khan’s Slugging Percentage. Khan has played acceptable corner outfield defense, but his offense has been strange. He’s getting on base at a respectable .333 clip, but is hitting .167 with one extra base hit. Khan will likely cede his spot to Danny Weatherwax against the lefty Murrin, but the story is similar. Weatherwax has only had 19 Plate Appearances, but he’s hitting for a .143 slugging mark and a .368 on-base percentage.
1.09: Addison Reed’s ERA: Reed is having an amazing year at age 39. He’s 3-0 with four Saves in 23 Games, working to a miniscule 1.09 ERA and 0.85 WHIP. He hasn’t allowed a homer and has two walks against 22 strikeouts. An underrated aspect of Reed’s career success has been his own solidity against lefties. Not since 2019, way back with the Mets, has Reed allowed an OPS above .719 to left-handers in a healthy season. His ERA is rivaling his 2025 mark where he put up a 1.17 mark in 42 Games.
Questions for the GMs:
For Robert Savard, after a good start, why has Willy Adames ridden the bench this month?
Alfredo Santana has been one of your best pitchers, but has an oblique strain. Will you put him on the IL or keep him around if need be?
How do you plan to succeed against Kansas City’s excellent back-end bullpen?
For Daniel Kent, how excited are you for this Corado-Murrin showdown?
You have a Right Field platoon, none of whom looks like can hit right now. You also have Quentin Holmes, who you have given 17 starts to who also hasn’t hit. How do you plan to get production from the position today?
Rhino Murrin has gored opposing hitters, getting them to drive the ball straight into the ground and limiting homers and hard contact. How does your offense plan to tackle him today?
