New York Yankees (11-10) @ Baltimore Orioles (11-10)
Projected Starters:
NYY: L Sean Newcomb (1-1, 3.58 ERA)
BAL:R Sam Carlson (0-0, 4.60 ERA)
Yankees 3 Key Stats
1(st): AL Ranking for Home Runs + Walks. This Yankees lineup has some serious pop and a eye for bad pitching. Baltimore pitcher Carlson will have to be at his best to keep these bats quiet but with an elevated HR/9 already to start this season the Yankees hope he doesnt find that spark when they come to visit Oriole Park. Lead off man Blake Rutherford comes to life against RHP with .324/.361/.515 slashline proves he can seriously hit but if your too cautious and walk him he has some dangerous talent on the basepaths with the speed to back it up.
3 + 7: A 3 game set saw the Yankees sweep Baltimore already this season, it was low scoring affair and a real pitching duel but it should give New York some much needed confidence on the road. Games on the road has been a real struggle for New York so far, with 7 losses and only 3 wins they must be hoping facing a more familar foe and division rival gives them the opportunity to change their fortunes. Incidentally New York are also tied 3rd with Seattle for Stolen Bases in the AL could this be a different plan of attack they can use to unsettle Carlson.
5: Games in a row without a win. While on the face of it this looks like the wheels have come off in New York after a 11-5 start, if we were to put it into context however there is not many teams that have been able to compete with the high flying ClevelandIndians(redacted).
Orioles 3 Key Stats:
.395 The best batting average in baseball and it belongs to what some might consider the best center fielder in baseball Wessel Russchen. Russchen is on fire to start the year on pace for 13.7 WAR, if he continues to tear the cover off the ball it would be 3.7 WAR more than his 2027 MVP winning season. Even in todays baseball its very rare that you come upon a player like Wessel. Who can run, who can field, who can throw, who can hit and who can hit for power. Those five tools, you see dont see that very often. The one positive for New York facing this guy is his only weakness (not that you would know it) is left handed pitching, Newcomb could well decide the game by keeping this monster quiet.
7 + 3: The exact opposite of New York, after a rough start Baltimore are now 7-3 in their last 10 games outscoring their opponents 57-32. The bats are awake and the pitching has stabilised this might be the worst time for the Yankees to be visiting Oriole park.
8 Strikeouts that Carlson had in this last start. Pitching 5.2 innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 runs and only 2 walks while throwing a total of 95 pitches its safe to say Carlson's last outing was the best of the season so far. He really struggled in his first 2 starts but that last outing could see the return of the consistency that he has shown in his past 3 seasons in Baltimore in which he accumulated a combined 15 WAR and 48 WINS, a return any organisation would love to have.
Questions for the GMs:
For Terry Kift, after back to back poor finishes in the division do think you have what it takes this year to take a step forward and compete for a playoff spot?
One of, if not your biggest acquisition in the offseason was Curt Gemma seemingly to sure up your pen but how do you feel about his poor start to the season?
With the first round of the draft done, you picked up talented 3B Justin Campbell. Do you see him as the perfect replacement for the aging future hall of famer Xander Bogaerts in the not to distant future?
For Ben Nuzzo, Pre-season predictions saw Baltimore as the favourites in the AL East, with how you have started the year do you feel these expectations are realistic or are Boston still the favourites?
Baltimore currently has one of the most effective pitching staff in the AL with a deep pen, if you make it to the playoffs do you believe this could give you an edge?
Having 2 rookies in the outfield in Bollman and Guzman and them not starting the year very well could this be an area you look to improve on down the stretch? or will you stick with the young guys and hope to nurture their talents?
