New York Yankees (49-64) @ Kansas City Royals (58-53)
NYY: Darwinzon Hernandez (4-4, 6.58)
KC: T. J. Zeuch (7-4, 3.84)
Yankees 3 Key Stats
4.59: Darwinzon Hernandez’ ERA: Hernandez got off to a brutal start under his old GM Vic Black in San Francisco, positing a 10.12 ERA in five games with the Giants. Terry Kift properly analyzed Hernandez didn’t have a Spring Training and signed him to a contract in July. Hernandez had aberrantly high 3.4 HR/9 and 3.4 BB/9 numbers in San Francisco, turning them into 1.1 and 1.9 marks with the Yankees respectably. Those numbers are more in line with Hernandez’ career numbers. If not for a 364 BABIP, he’d be having an excellent run with the Yankees.
.942: Francisco DeJesus’ OPS: DeJesus is having a great offensive year. He already has 35 homers and is on pace for 50. His 73 RBIs are tied for sixth in the league. His OPS is the highest since his final season in Seattle. With Roderick Dalton having a tough year and Jose Altuve likely to fall off, DeJesus is a strong candidate for a Platinum Stick Award, his first since 2025.
.546: Shane Shifflett’s OPS: The Yankees gave Shifflett a one-year deal in May, and he’s been absolutely terrible. He’s hitting just .208 with a .260 OPS. His defense has been good, but he has a negative WAR. It’s still preposterous that he wanted a contract worth over $30 million a year.
Royals 3 Key Stats
3.8: Jonathan Bakos’s OPS: Kansas City will have to deal without Bakos for a month, which will be a tough loss. Bakos is hitting .292 with 19 homers, 10 triples, and 20 doubles for a well-rounded profile. He also has 13 steals in 15 attempts and has played excellent defense. Bakos earned his first All-Star nod this year and looks like an All-Star for years to come.
18: Harland Guenette doubles: Guenette had a massive season in 2028, but it’s looking like a major outlier. He’s slashing .248/.326/.386, career lows. He’s even approaching last year’s strikeout totals. Kansas City has had a tough go of it and is currently out of the playoffs and Guenette’s struggles are a huge part of it.
9: Losses in 11 extra inning games: Kansas City has been brutal in close affairs. They’re only 13-24 in one-run games, and have been terrible in extra innings. The Royals somehow have a .405 OPS in extra innings, worst in the AL. They have two extra inning runs in 11 games. The Royals will need to keep this to a nine-inning game to have their best shot at coming away with a win.
Questions for the GMs:
For Terry Kift, Shane Shifflett has been awful for you. Will he or Severino get more playing time moving forward?
Darwinzon Hernandez has had a solid season for you. Any plans to extend him?
You’ve given Bob Allison more playing time. How has he looked to you?
For Daniel Kent, your team hasn’t played up to the standards set the past few years. What’s been the biggest culprit?
How will you replace Bakos in the lineup today?
Xavier Edwards is due off the IL today. Will he go on rehab or be back in the lineup today?
TRIVIA: Xavier Edwards and Harland Guenette are first and second in career WAR in players drafted and signed by the Reds. Who is third?
