Oakland Athletics (7-4) @ Baltimore Orioles (3-6)
OAK: Angel Garcia (1-0,1.86)
BAL: Holden Christian (0-1, 2.31)
Athletics 3 Key Stats
.302: Oakland’s batting average: The Athletics have been on an offensive tear to start the year, thanks to exceptional offensive depth. Not only is the team’s average .302, but all 13 position players have at least 14 plate appearances and nine of the 13 are hitting over .300. Of the four who aren’t, Kyle Lewis has a very healthy .292 average and Arturo Rivera’s strong .283 average comes with five doubles and three steals in three attempts. Everyone has played, and virtually everyone has played well.
1.86: Angel Garcia’s ERA: The 23-year-old Garcia is off to a strong start. He got a cup of coffee in 2028 and had a small role in 2029, but was given an important role for 2030 as Oakland’s second starter. He’s largely lived up to the role. He was a touch wild in his opening start against the Angels, but despite three walks and five hits in 4 innings, he issued only one run. He faced a step up in competition against Boston last week and was sharper with a single walk, six hits, and 5.2 innings pitched of one-run ball. He’s worked at home both starts though—today will be his first time taking the ball on the road in 2030.
.160: Addison Russell’s batting average: Russell is the one hitter for Oakland who hasn’t hit, batting just .160 his first week. However, he has a mitigating circumstance, being signed March 29 and missing Spring Training. Oakland has reason to believe he’ll turn it around, as he’s had a better than average OPS+ every season of his career aside from 2022. He hit 36 doubles last year with a .773 OPS+. If last week worked out his rust, he could be primed to have a big day again soon. He may have shaken off the rust Sunday—homering and stealing a base against Houston in a 9-2 win.
Orioles 3 Key Stats
0-4: Baltimore’s record in two run games. The Orioles have not fared well in close affairs. They’ve held on for a pair of one-run wins going 2-1 when games were very close. However, in games with two-run margins, Baltimore has struggled to begin the year. Offensive struggled have been the main culprit as Baltimore has scored just 11 runs in their two-run losses. They’ll need their offense to pick up to get back to winning.
.450: Wessel Russchen’s OPS: Russchen got 25 plate appearances in for The Netherlands in the WBC, so he had some games to knock off rust. However, he’s been rough to begin the season. He hasn’t homered, he’s getting on base at a .200 clip, and he’s playing poor defense. The Orioles won’t succeed with Russchen playing so poorly—he needs to turn it around quickly.
3: Plate Appearances for Emmanuel Tapia this year: Baltimore has de-emphasized Tapia to begin the season. Nick Gordon has played ahead of him at DH, and has played well, hitting .314. However, Wilkerman Garcia is playing Third Base and is batting just .156. It’s been a cute idea to get more speed and flexibility in the lineup for Baltimore, but they need to get back to playing Tapia.
Questions for the GMs:
For Garrett White, Adam Haseley will miss the next two weeks. How will you replace him in the lineup and on the roster?
John Malcolm will miss the next five weeks. How will you replace him in the lineup and on the roster?
Joe White will miss the next five weeks. How will you replace him in the lineup and on the roster?
For Ben Nuzzo, why have you gone away from Emmanuel Tapia in your lineup?
Luis Garcia is day to day. Will he play today?
David Bollman is struggling. Will we see Juan Carrasco in Left Field today?
