Arizona Diamondbacks (61-70) @ San Francisco Giants (78-52)
ARI: Jim Robinson (9-12, 6.27)
SF: Evan Orcutt (4-3, 4.29)
Diamondbacks 3 Key Stats
742: Runs allowed: Arizona has been the worst run prevention team in the NL this year. Playing in a hitters park doesn’t help, but Arizona had hope that they would have an elite rotation. Luis Ortiz has a 7.42 ERA though, Jim D’Amico is hurt and has a 5.34 mark, and tonight’s starter Jim Robinson has been a disaster. Husky Robinson is only 9-12 a year after going 15-10, and currently has a 6.27 ERA. He’s allowed 33 homers. His inability to pitch well is a main reason why the Diamondbacks will fall well short of the playoffs this year.
40: Homers hit by Robert Correa: Arizona continues to find young, talented sluggers and Correa is the next up. The Dominican native just turned 24, but is a candidate for Rookie of the Year. He has 91 RBIs, a solid .268 average, and has been okay in Left Field. Correa showed signs of being great in the minors. He was the Midwest League MVP last year, a season after finishing third in MVP voting in the Midwest League. He should have been advanced earlier, but Arizona made up for it by promoting him straight to the majors. Now they have another star outfielder to pair with Tony Sierra, Jimmy Torres, and Pedro Tapia.
-1.3: Chris Paramore’s WAR: After a solid 2029 with a .744 OPS and decent enough Shortstop defense, Paramore has fallen apart. He has a .233 average with only 16 walks in 90 games. He only has two homers and a triple, and his defense at Shortstop has been awful. This may be a low point, but it also may signify that Paramore is no longer cut out to have a significant PBA role. If his defense has fallen, and his bat has diminished, and he’s never run well what does he offer?
Giants 3 Key Stats
4.1: Andres Gimenez’ 2029 WAR: Gimenez hasn’t played all year after tearing his flexor tendon in his elbow skipping stones in the winter. His injury has been one of the few down spots for San Francisco this year. Vic Black brought over old pal Luis Paez to play Shortstop, and the former Oriole has held his own with good defense and a .280 average. However, Gimenez has a more dynamic bat and is a better baserunner at his peak. Expect Gimenez to begin rehabbing and be back up in early September.
1.000: Andrew Benintendi’s career OPS: Benintendi is finally on the gentle decline stage of his career. Long one of the most complete hitters in baseball, his .863 mark this year is the first since his rookie year in 2017 that it’s been below .900. As a result, his OPS for his career has dropped to a nice even 1.000. It’s a benchmark reserved for the league’s most storied hitters, and one only three players have current reached for their career. Benintendi still has 23 homers and 27 doubles, so while he won’t produce the high .300 averages he’s produced in the past, nor the 40+ homers, he’s still a dangerous weapon at the plate. A two-time champion, he also has a shot at a third this fall.
53: Home runs allowed at home this year: San Francisco is a very difficult place to hit. The 53 homers allowed by San Francisco tie them with Milwaukee for the fewest homers allowed at home this year. That’s important against Arizona because the Diamondbacks have two hitters who already have 40 homers, plus Tony Sierra who may have had 40 already if he didn’t miss time with injury. If San Francisco can keep Arizona’s hits inside the park, it’ll be tough for Arizona to put up enough runs to score.
Questions for the GMs:
For Andrew Frisbie, Tim Barton, Gleyber Torres, and Cal Conley are all due off the IL today. Will we see all of them, or will they go on rehab assignments?
How will your pitching staff shake up with Jim D’Amico hurt?
Your team won 85 and 93 games the last two years. Why hasn’t your team seen continued progress this year?
For Vic Black, you had to make a roster move to get Manny Machado back on the roster, waiving and DFAing Mike Trout as a consequence. Will you make any roster moves this week to get an outfielder back in your lineup?
You had Mekhi Lias in the bullpen most of the year, calling him to the rotation the last week. Why did you move him to the rotation and move Tristan Casas to the bullpen.
Mike Bishop and Mike Knox have struggled mightily offensively this year. Will either be on your postseason roster?
TRIVIA: Who is the only Giants starting Third Baseman to ever have more than 20 home runs in a season?
