St. Louis Cardinals (96-60) @ Arizona Diamondbacks (74-82)
STL: Chris Yera: (10-5, 3.55)
ARI: Adam Holmgren (1-9, 7.43)
Cardinals 3 Key Stats:
134: Road home runs: St. Louis has played well on the road, going 45-33, with power being a big driver. Their 134 road bombs are second in the NL to San Francisco, while their 99 home homers are middle of the pack. Most of the Cardinals hitters have slightly more homers on the road than at home, but Isaiah High has a pretty big split with 23 of his 37 homers away from The Cardinals Nets. St. Louis will begin their final road series of the year in offensive haven Arizona, giving High and his teammates a shot to boost those stats some more.
.650: Extra Inning OPS: Somehow St. Louis only has a .650 OPS in extra innings, second to last in the NL to Miami’s .646. The Cardinals just haven’t been able to produce in overtime. It’s held the club back as the team is 4-7 in extra inning games. Obviously there are small samples everywhere, but once again, High has interesting numbers. He’s only 3-15 in extras with no walks, no RBIs, one double, and eight strikeouts. St. Louis is best served taking care of business in nine.
2025: The last PBA season Bryan Martelo had an OPS under .800. Despite essentially not playing all of 2028 and 2029, Martelo has played 2030 and played well. The 33 year old has 22 homers and an .865 OPS over 106 games and has been one of the best stories in the league. He’s played to type as a slugger who always crushes lefties, but struggled against righties. Lefties have allowed half his 22 homers and half his 16 doubles, despite having only 167 plate appearances versus southpaws compared to 237 against righties. As a result, Martelo has a 1.021 OPS against lefties versus a .759 mark against righties. The number against righties is very respectable, but Arizona better not turn to its only lefty, Jose Paulino, to face Martelo in a big moment.
Diamondbacks 3 Key Stats
7.43: Adam Holmgren’s ERA: It’s been a lost season for Holmgren. His season was delayed due to a partially torn labrum, and has turned into a disaster after it healed. He’s 1-9 with a 7.43 ERA a year after turning in a 3.24 mark in his first year as a starter. He’s only 26 and he’ll get a couple of starts to build momentum for next year, but it’s hard to know who he’ll be in the future—the stellar arm who was a key member of Arizona’s surprise 2029, or the disaster who’s helped sink Arizona’s horrendous 2030.
.271: Pedro Tapia’s OBP: Tapia was a star last year. He bashed 31 homers, he bashed 46 doubles, he hit .291, and he was part of Arizona’s dynamic outfield. Only 26 most of this year, he’s fallen apart. His 24 doubles are only half as much as last year, his .233 average is a huge drop, and his .271 OBP is, frankly, terrible. Instead of Arizona having a dynamic outfielder, they have a replacement player. Arizona likely doesn’t know if they can count on Tapia for next season.
122: Gary Ford’s RBIs: Not every Diamondback has had a terrible year—Gary Ford has continued to build on a huge 2029. He’s been slightly below last year’s numbers, but just slightly. He has 48 homers, 122 RBIs, and an .881 OPS, easily the best in those categories. He’s the favorite for another Platinum Stick award.
Questions for the GMs:
For Tim Lentz, Justin Hall is due off the IL today. Will he be activated?
Darrick Hall is also due off the IL today. Will he have a place on your postseason roster?
Bob Beasley and Ronnie Mauricio are a bit tired today. Will they be in your lineup?
For Andrew Frisbie, a bunch of your outfielders are due expensive raises. Will any likely be traded or non-tendered?
Shane Cornelius has hinted at possibly being a starting outfielder, or at least a fourth outfielder, but he’s been having a terrible season. He’s hitting .161 with a .467 OPS, and 44 strikeouts against seven walks. Will he be given another chance next year?
What do you make of many of your pitchers having excellent years last year and taking a step back this year. Do you have confidence in them next year?
