New York Mets
2032: 94-68, NL East Champion, Lost 4-3 in the NLDS to San Francisco
Who were they: The 2032 Mets won the NL East with confidence. No other team came close to making them sweat. Pitching was clearly the team’s strategy as all five starters posted a WaR of 2.6 or higher. However, even that stat fails to communicate the rotation’s dominance. The worst pitch on the staff the was Jeff Morrison, who started 32 games and pitched to an ERA of 2.66. Eric Pena was phenomenal, coasting to a 7.1 WaR season, which saw him easily win the NL Cy Young award and finish 3rd in the NL MVP voting. A bullpen led by Luis Ortiz and Devasarasa Lalitesh provided no relief to opposing pitchers in the latter innings. However, the Mets couldn’t replicate their success on the mound with the bats. Jim Sattler and Andy Fleck had solid seasons in the outfield, but no other Met eclipsed 2.3 WaR on offense.
Offseason review: Pat French is a free agent. Jhoan Duran was traded to the Indians for Tonche. Jim Sattler hit free agency and is somehow still looking for a team even though he is asking for less than $3 million. Joe Swetz was traded to the White Sox for Cobi Johnson and Jonathan DeLay. Almost every other bat also hit free agency or was traded. Walls, Hernandez, and Swanson sign small 1 year deals. A rare inter-division trade for Brian Radcliff. A few other minor trades to bring in PBA pieces.
Prediction: OSA has the Mets winning the division again in 2033, but with considerably less confidence at a record of 78–84. I agree that the Mets might regress this year, but I believe they will comfortably win the division and finish well over 500.
Current PBA Elo Rank: 7th
Farm Rank: 30th - No top 100 ranked prospects.
Questions: You completely revamped your offense this offseason. What bat(s) are you most excited about for 2033? After a strong 2032 season, why didn’t Sattler get invited back to New York? The Tonche trade was one of the most insane trades ever completed in the PBA, with 14 players/picks being sent to Cleveland. How did that trade come about and why give up so many pieces? Luis Ortiz was a lights out closer last year, but is set up to step into a rotation spot, what prompted this change? Do you think he can be an even better starter?
Philadelphia Phillies
2032: 79-83, Failed to reach the playoffs
Who were they: The Phillies finished second in the East last year by a small margin, but posted a second losing record after their 100 win season in 2030. The Phillies struggled to find quality on the mound throughout 2032. Two of their starters had a negative WaR. The other three put together had less WaR than division rival Eric Pena. Only one starter, Dombrowski, posted a sub-4.00 ERA at 3.97. The Phillies did find success with their bats as Bobby Siegel led the way smashing 54 home runs. He found his way on to the MVP ballot finishing 5th. Only 26, Siegel has already accumulated 31.6 PBA WaR and looks well on his way to HoF career.
Offseason review: The Phillies continue to be in rebuild mode, recently completing a behemoth of a trade that sent promising second year standout Charles Galimberti to the Yankees for a package headlined by pitcher Juan Villarreal. Royce Lewis became a free agent and signed with the Padres. Brian Radcliff was traded to the Mets. Shane Baz became a free agent and signed with the Diamondbacks. Signed Dombrowski to a 3 year, $28 million contract.
Prediction: The Phillies are in clear rebuild mode, shedding most of their talent from last year outside of Siegel and Dombrowski. OSA predicts a 73 win season, but I would be taking the under.
Current PBA Elo Rank: 15th
Farm Rank: 9th - David Norris (26th) is the highest ranked prospect in the system.
Questions: How did the Galimberti trade come about and do you feel like you got enough back in return for trading the young player? Outside of Villarreal, what prospect acquired via a trade this offseason excites you the most? Siegal is an impressive young player. How do you see him factoring into the rebuild long-term? Will you try to sign him this year?
Washington Nationals
2032: 78-84, Failed to reach the playoffs
Who were they: The Nationals had a fair set of individual stars in 2032, but couldn’t find the overall team effort needed to put together a winning season. Trent Clark posted a 4.7 WaR and Julio Rodriguez provided consistency at DH with a .800+ OPS. R.J. Jarrett continued his improbable late career resurgence mashing 30+ home runs for the second season in a row. The starting rotation found average success with Josh Carlson leading the way. All of the team’s starters were able to produce a positive WaR, but only one starter eclipsed 2 WaR
Offseason review: The pitching staff is mostly staying intact with Dave Simon, who provided 55 solid innings of relief, being the only main departure. Trent Clark was the largest offseason departure and signed a $5.4 million 1-year contract with the White Sox. Amari Maggette had a solid season and also departed as a free agent. Not many incomings took place this offseason for the Nationals by the way of PBA level contracts. The team had a large number of players returning on arbitration contracts and picked up an additional three players in the Rule-5 draft. Marchan was extended and locked down for another 3 years.
Prediction: The Nationals continue to be in rebuild mode. They have accumulated a lot of talent on the farm, but most of that talent is still a year or more away from being PBA ready. OSA predicts a 73-89 record for the PBA club, which sounds about right. I would probably take the over on that number though since the Nationals reached 78 wins with virtually the same team, and the division feels slightly weaker than 2032.
Current PBA Elo Rank: 20th
Farm Rank: 2nd - Alex Ruiz (7th) is the highest ranked prospect in the system.
Questions: How do you view the entire Tsuruo Toguchi saga, what will be his role this year, and what will be his role in the future? He might be one of the most overpaid players in the league and the club traded away what ended being last year’s Cy Young winner. However, the trade also netted you your best prospect in Alex Ruiz. Do you expect there to be any major prospect graduations this year, and if so, who are you most excited to have debut? Jara Ojo was a big international signing last offseason and was originally projected to be a strong rotation piece. Will he get a chance to start this year?
Atlanta Braves
2032: 68-94, Failed to reach the playoffs
Who were they: The 2032 Atlanta Braves can best be described as having a top heavy team. Three players, Jay Tudor, Mike Murrin, and Jordan Cabral combined for 12.4 WaR. The rest of the team netted 4 WaR. Jordan Cabral was a real bright spot as he made his PBA debut in 2032 and finished 3rd in the NL RoY voting. The rookie hit 42 home runs while posting an .826 OPS. After a two year hiatus, Jay Tudor returned to his best form and posted a massive season, rewarding Atlanta’s trust after signing him to a 7-year, $128 million contract. Many viewed that signing with immense skepticism, but Atlanta and Tudor have proven the league wrong so far. Mike Murrin was another bright spot, making 33 starts and posting a sub-4 FIP. However, Atlanta was unable to find a supporting cast for these three stars, which ultimately resulted in a disappointing season.
Offseason review: Departures from pitching staff were light this offseason. Jeff Burton, a solid reliever, became a free agent. However, the same can’t be said for the bats. Jordan Cabral was a massive departure via a trade with the Angels, netting the club three players and a pick. Outside of this, Atlanta’s offseason was pretty quiet with no major signings or extensions.
Prediction: OSA predicts a 74-88 season for Atlanta in 2033. I would take the under on this record personally as the loss of Cabral’s production was not really replaced by any of the club’s moves. With Cabral and virtually the same team, Atlanta only produced a 68 win season in 2032.
Current PBA Elo Rank: 22nd
Farm Rank: 23rd - Harvey Jones (71st) is the highest ranked prospect in the system.
Questions: What was your motivation behind trading Jordan Cabral? What excites you most about the trade? Where do you see the club trending this year, towards a rebuild or a potential wild card spot? You proved most of the league wrong in year one of Tudor’s contract, what is your bold prediction for him in 2033?
Miami Marlins
2032: 63-99, Failed to reach the playoffs
Who were they: Chris Newton. But actually though, Miami’s 2032 season might has well been Chris Newton’s personal playground. He dominated the PBA, posting a 8.2 WaR and running away with the NL MVP and a well deserved Platinum Stick. At the age of 25, Newton is a cornerstone. Sean Jennings was a solid compliment to Newton, breaking out in 2032 with a 3.4 WaR season. Miami’s downfall came on the mound, driven mostly by dreadful starting pitching. Outside of Jacobson, who started 35 games to a tune of a 3.73 ERA, Miami could not find consistent starting pitching. Rintala had a small streak of successful starts, but the other three rotation spots failed to accumulate more than 0.5 WaR combined.
Offseason review: As expected, Miami revamped a decent bit of their pitching staff, mostly through departures, but did hold on to their main contributors. On the offensive side of the plate, Jean Carlos Carmona departed for free agency after a solid season. Mark Ward was brought in on a 3-year $21 million deal. It was a quiet offseason in general for the fish though.
Prediction: Between Newton and Jennings, the Marlins could easily have the best outfield duo in the PBA in 2033. Chotkowski will debut in 2033 and could be a real contributor by the end of the season. OSA projects a 76-86 record for the Marlins in 2033 and has them finishing second in the division. I agree with the prediction of finishing second. If there is a team that has a chance to challenge the Mets this year, it will be the Marlins.
Current PBA Elo Rank: 27th
Farm Rank: 7th - Ray Chotkowski (26th) is the highest ranked prospect in the system.
Questions: After a really poor performance from your starters in 2032, do you feel like Chotkowski’s promotion is enough to turn the rotation around? With Newton, Jennings, and Chotkowski, you should have a solid core to build around. However, with the promotion of Chotkowski, the farm will be pretty sparse. What is your plan for building around these three stars? Do you think you can catch the Mets this year? If so, what do you feel like your team needs to do, and if you don’t catch them, what most likely went wrong?
