Minnesota sends: - SP Jose Berrios ML - CF Byron Buxton ML
Oakland sends: - SP Dan Straily ML - SP Forrest Whitley AAA (injury noted) - SS Nick Allen AA - C Thomas Dillard A+ - P Frederick De La Cruz R-Canada - CF Wessel Russchen INT (move to R I assume?) - 2021 1st round draft pick
Thanks Sam for the talks! We've been discussing Berrios for some time, and ultimately Sam came with the strongest starting offer and was willing to negotiate from there. Adding Buxton was done later--I'm hesitant to include him in the deal, but the risk of injury and defense last year is a concern for me. We probably weren't going to be able to hold on to him, long-term. This move fills some holes for us, sheds salary, and boosts our farm system, which is dearly needed. Thanks again!

Right now, the salaries don't work until arbitration is done and I have proof he won't have guys on his books. With current arb estimates, he'd be over his max amount of $10.8 overbudget. Once Finnegan is officially clear the deal may be doable, but I'll need to wait until after arbitration for the specifics to be set.

Agreed.. we should have probably waited a sim before posting to make the $ work.
This is a massive deal for a tiny market team like the A's - one that will either play off or blow up very quickly. I guess we're 'win now'.
We've been cautiously building the farm and finances for a couple of years and now a lot of our best youngsters are ready for break out years - Puk, Haseley, Rutherford, Wade, Aquino, Mateo, Gowdy, Montas are 25 and under... so now the plan was to find an ace to go with Finnigan at the top of the rotation. Except Finnegan sacrificed himself in the WC game - so now we need a new #1.
Berrios isn't quite a #1 but he's close. Aaron and I found a deal for him relatively quickly and then Buxton became available. We've struggled with power for a while, so Buxton, Santander, Aquino, and Olson coming off the DL is a big upgrade. The other reason this deal makes so much sense is the division.. the Astros bubble looks to be bursting and the division could be wide open for a few years.
We're letting a ton of players go here. I'll miss Straily but can live without most of the rest. The big loss is a guy I picked up for a ton of money in Int. FA; Wessel Russchen CF... he's about as nailed on as a blue chip prospect can get. If he fulfills his incredible potential he'll be one of the best player in the league and I'll regret this deal for a decade!

I'm going to split this trade in two as it can only be processed with 5 players at a time. Note that that will be mainly for record keeping.
