While a lot of the MLB teams played ‘pass the parcel’ with their players in the off-season the Mets stayed pat and the opening series of the 2017 season against the Braves at Citi Field appeared to say that was the wrong decision.
A sixth innings solo shot by Freddie Freeman off ace Noah Syndergaard handed him & the Mets an Opening Day 3-2 loss, Atlanta went on to sweep Mets in this opening series. The Mets were stunned but fought back as their fans hadn’t seen them before. Miami (twice), Philadelphia (twice) and Washington were all swept as Mets roared to a sixteen-game unbeaten streak. ‘Thor’ in particular reacted to his opening loss by going 4-0 the rest of the month, pitching three complete games and two shut-outs as well as setting the Mets regular season strikeout record with 13 against the Phillies. Addison Reed was the star out of the bullpen, going 2-0 in 11 outings with a 0.69 ERA from 13 IP. #2 pitcher Jacob deGrom suffered a strained forearm at the end of the second week and is not expected back until June, an injury which resulted in 26-yr-old Sean Gilmartin being called up from Las Vegas. Gilmartin won his first MLB start as Phillies were beaten 6-2 but he was tagged with the loss in his second start after Atlanta won 7-5 to snap Mets 16-game winning streak. New York only posted one more loss in April as they romped to a MLB best 20-5 record.
The batters didn’t quite have as much pop in their bats as they would have liked but outfielder Michael Conforto led the team with six long balls and Asdrubal Cabrera drove in a team-leading 20 runs from the lead-off spot, mainly thanks to both Wright and Conforto having an OBP over .380.
The farm didn’t have quite an amazing time in general but the Mets’ South Atlantic League affiliate, the Columbus Fireflies, also had a 20-5 month but still trailed the division leaders by a game. Pitchers Antony Kay & Colin Holderman both went 4-0 for the month but top pitching prospect Robert Gsellman was a major disappointment going 0-4 from 5 starts with an ERA north of nine. Minor league hitter of the month was St Lucie Mets’ Jhoan Urena who in 21 appearances hit .402/.447/.653 with 3 homers & 20 RBI in the Florida State League
